I've always said that it's not even close. Rugby players each have to play every position, on top of knowing and studying their play system constantly. It's more like playing chess while getting destroyed for 90 minutes. Also, playing rugby on your knees is not allowed.

Rugby players use their shoulders and core more, mostly because they don’t have helmets. Obviously due to how much nfl players used their heads back in the day the nfl wanted to be more safe and had to evolve from nothing, to a leather pad, to what we have today. Rugby is more grappling.

Rugby is actually a lot more brutal than American football as you are bringing down huge players with only your own physical strength no protection there’s less injuries as the players are thought to perfection to tackle the right way leading to no damage to either side Americans run at each other at full force

International Rugby Union and NFL Football are like comparing apples and oranges. NFL . . . - 4 hours of a 60 minute game played in 5 second intervals. Incessant interruptions, timeouts, commercials. Average “ball in play” is 13 minutes per game. Clock management kills the spirit of the sporting contest. - 11 aside, at least 5 referees not counting the replay booth. - 3 teams aside; offence, defence, special teams. Some players are on for 15 seconds a game. Special team players don’t even break a sweat. - Depending on position, very limited skill development required. - Average play; ball is snapped, play is made pedantically repetitively, flag for something immaterial to the outcome of the play, referee huddle, 5 minute replay, jury selection, players call lawyers, plea bargain, call is made, do over. 4 hours of this crap. - 3 teams on the field at once . . . Offence, defence, and referee. Players playing opposition AND referee, begging calls. Over-officiated, game is about the covey of referees and booth and their pedantic over management. - Play ENDS at the tackle. - “Touchdown” and “Scrimmage” are bastardized terms from Rugby Union. There is never a touchdown in the NFL, there is no law that a player needs to touch the ball down under control in the in goal area. It should be a “crossover”. A scrummage is a Rugby restart where 8 men from each team pack down and contest for possession. Sheesh. - The kick off of every game is such a great metaphor of the game itself. Huge build up . . . Fans on the edge of their seats . . . what’s going to happen? . . . kickoff . . . touch back. Sigh. - My gawd, I’m bored and frustrated just writing this. Rugby Union . . . - 80 minutes of continuous play, up to 20 phases (downs) in some cases, up to 6 or 9 minutes played before a restart has to happen. - 15 aside, ONE referee with 2 Touch Judges whom the referee may or may not consult. It’s the referee’s discretion. - The offence, defence, and special teams are all played by the 15 on each side. - Tremendous skill development required by ALL players. - Average play; ball possession is contested at line out, scrum, or penalty. Once won, dynamic development of driving mauls, crashing off loads, punishing rucks, fast hands to ‘against the grain’ runs from the backs, cheeky passes to supporting players, maybe a kick, rib crushing tackles, try in the corner. Duration of play? 2-6 minutes. Ebb and flow. 80 minutes pure entertainment. - Laws of Rugby Union inherently support the concept of continuous play. IE the referee may award a penalty, but allow play if the non offending team has gained an advantage. IE the referee can elect to warn a player he is in an offside position, if the player retreats onside, all good, play on. In the event of a penalty, play does not HAVE to be stopped. IE play BEGINS at the tackle. - Was there a penalty? Probably, but it wasn’t material to the game, play on. - Was there an injury? Yes, the player is hobbled away from play . . . play on. No reward for injury. - Play the referee begging for a call, risk a send off under the yellow card. Play the opposition not the referee. North American Football is Rugby Union ruined. Average self absorbed American knows nothing of another country’s culture or sport. Played, coached, refereed both games - both in the US and internationally. No contest. Football = collision. Rugby = contact. Those are 2 different things entirely. Basketball players make the best transition. That doesn’t mean rugby is not as physical as football (see “Chabal” clip, yet to come). Imagine if the athletic specimens in the NFL were aerobically fit and committed to the real game called Rugby Union. As a referee, I can pick an ex football player in the warm out from a mile away. They don’t last due to either . . . - fatigue, or - Injuries due to tackling with the head on the wrong side. Im often asked . . . NFL, Rugby Union, Rugby League. Can one transition back and forth? The answer is both Yes and No. One can go from Rugby to Football, but not Football to Rugby. Best Rugby players are wrestlers and basketballers. I observe, 1) American football players don’t last physically in the game due to poor tackling habits. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqqnoZ2glteEa7M (American footballers trying to Union are always being carted off, can pick them out during warmups), 2) American players are anaerobically conditioned, they’re knackered after 5 minutes (I can see it in their eyes) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2PVpqyPbM2ka80 3) American football players don’t offload, at all. They’re easy targets. kzbin.info/www/bejne/enjRkKeHis5go9k, and 4) Rugby tackles kzbin.info/www/bejne/boqtXnSBfZyXfqM&feature=share are hard. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3zRl2eul7tnd80. American Footballers get eaten alive in Rugby Union. Oh - and they play through injury, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKnZdnh8fdx9iMk - none of that laying down for 5 minutes, “going under the tent” bullshit.

The big difference really is outside of NZ the rugby players to n this video are not famous and are really not known as stars like in the NFL because rugby is not a big popular sport in Britain like football or the NFL .. The English and the Scottish love football, but rugby is liked by posh people and even in Wales football has taken over from rugby now.
