If the NHL did not allow cheap hits on the talented players like Bobby Orr he would have been up at the top in goals and assists and points. And would have reviled Wayne Gretzky.

I just watched a lindstrom (the greatest defenseman of all times) so I had to say, ummmmm wtf, wasn’t Orr A defenseman that was also Gretzky before Gretzky offensively? So how could anyone be ranked ahead of Orr when he was head & shoulders better than every second place guy in the league. Like Gretzky, but stops the teams best offensive dutes. Silly silly fools who have no interest or respect for history
@Ross-d5x2 күн бұрын
Well i played for 32 years so i have an opinion. He is the best to ever play the game. There are a couple out there that are sorta close. Ovie, for sure, and Lindros may have been but that q cant be answered. The best play at both ends of the ice. And sorry to PO a lot of ya but Wayne never pkayed both ends. Nuff said.

Wayne Gretzky is one of those legends you can't fully comprehend until you've seen them in action. That said, the wiki page dedicated to his records paints a pretty vivid picture of how mythical his career was.

he's my fave all time player and i grew up watching gretzky (and a habs fan), the difference was gretzky was small and fast while lemieux smashed through defenses but both of them had incredible stick puck handling skills... lemieux broke many of gretzky's jr records and if it wasn't for his injuries/health issues I think he would have broken some of them in the nhl too, regarless his return to pro hockey after his cancer and ownership and entering the season at the halfway mark and then winning the scoring title is one of the greatest sports achievement in history. He also dominated in different styles of play, the 80's. 90'sclutch and grab years, speed years late 90s... the man was unstoppable

Imagine if he had been healthy and played in the Summit Series.We probably would’ve won 6 or 7 games. There would be no talk about Tretiak being so great. The Soviets would never be able to use him again. PTSD. And if Hull and Howe had played , I’ll let you do the math.

I then witnessed Mario and he was was a monster !! his scoring prowess was 2nd to none.Yes gretz got the more points and goal records but Mario scored at will.Best hands ever. Who's better ?Neither they both stand on top of Mnt everest of Hockey along with Orr, Howe Richard... Messier drives the snow plow just behind Jagr has the snow shovel

I am a new hockey fan from the UK and I recently became a fan of the Bruins, I've been a football (soccer) fan for most of my life and i also play defence in football, I didn't know about Bobby Orr until after I chose the Bruins as my team, I knew there was a reason why I liked the Bruins 😉 Bobby was all class and skill, I can't wait to get to TD Garden and see his statue there ☺️

Mr. Orr was more than a great player, he was a great ambassador for the game of ice hockey. And while his offensive presence was impressive, his defensive prowess shouldn’t be overlooked (he was on the ice for his “flying” goal in the finals because of that prowess, besides his obvious offensive skills). I grew up just a shade too late to fully appreciate this pioneer (I thought all defensemen owned the game like he did when he was out there. That’s all I ever knew!). Still, I did get to see Bobby Orr and, as anyone who saw him play will tell you, Bobby was the best, without question. He could skate, score, fight, control the game, and win. Bobby Orr could (would) easily do all of those things and even more. He really was a work of art! 🤗🏒

Gretzky turned pro at 17 for the now dufunct league the world hockey association WHA. The oilers were one of 6 teams drafted in the NHL. At 17 Wayne had 46 goals and 64 assists for 110 points. This league was similar to what happened with the ABA in basketball 🏀 when many teams went to the NBA.

If your basing it on pure natural ability, Mario takes the crown. While Gretzky was awesome, he was surrounded by great players for years where Mario had many years of average players around him his first years. Wayne was very protected by his coach and team. Do you remember Mario actually fighting up until he got his clock cleaned? I firmly believe, had Mario not had the chronic back issues where on game day he had to have help lacing up his skates then the cancer and finally the heart issue, he would hold most if not all of the records in hockey.

In Wayne's first two years, the league's 12th and 6th highest scoring seasons of the modern era, he played 159 games and had 301 points. In those same two years, Messier, Kurri, Coffey, Anderson and Lowe (the five hall of famers) played 497 games and had 314 points combined. In Mario's first two years, the 4th and 2nd highest scoring seasons of the modern era, he played 152 games and had 241 points. In those same two years, Warren Young, Mike Bullard, Doug Shedden, Wayne Babych and Terry Ruskowski played a combined 509 games for the Pens and had 468 points between them. We can even throw in Blair McDonald's 137 points in 131 games as Edmonton's 2nd highest scorer over Wayne's first two years to give those six Oilers not named Wayne 451 points in 628 games. These six Oilers were still outscored by 17 points by the five Penguins who played 121 fewer games. Mario should have outscored Wayne over their first two seasons but he couldn't for some unknown reason. Mario even had 159 more powerplays than Wayne had when you compare their first two seasons. I have no idea why people think that Wayne started with such a better team than Mario when that simply isn't the case.
@dannycarlow820410 күн бұрын
The funny thing about what you say about fighting is that Wayne actually has a Gordie Howe hat trick, but Mario doesn't.
@tomgardner263810 күн бұрын
@@dannycarlow8204 Well, I'd never compare Bullard, Shedden, Babych or anyone else on the team to a Messier, Coffey, Kuri or a Lowe.

@@dannycarlow8204 Mario fought a few times at first, then he fought the wrong guy. He was smacked hard, and I don't recall him fighting ever again after it.
@dannycarlow820410 күн бұрын
@@tomgardner2638 I'm not comparing them as players over a career, just their production over a two year span to show that while yes those Oilers had great careers, they weren't exactly shooting the lights out in their first few years. Also to show that Mario had players that were producing better than the Oiler hall of famers in their first few years. Look at Coffey, he had a .785 points per game average in his first two years with Wayne but it was 1.487 in his first two years with Mario. Wayne played with hall of famers in Edmonton but they weren't "those guys" immediately, it took time. Mario never cultivated a team like Wayne, he was just given players who were already bonafide all stars and hall of famers when they realized that Mario needed help to win. The Oilers never made a trade to acquire one of their core players, they were all drafted. Wayne just worked with what the team drafted. In the nine years that Wayne played in Edmonton, Mess, Kurri, Anderson and Coffey combined for fifteen 100+ point seasons while Wayne had nine. After Wayne left, he had six more 100+ point seasons while the other four players combined for only five 100+ seasons to end their careers. (Two were Coffey with Mario)

The video that will let you see the OTHER side of ORR. kzbin.info/www/bejne/injNoaJueN2kjrs Orr was an elite skater for that era and very good offensively but defensively he was sub par. Bruins lead 5-1 over MTL then cue the great comeback. #2 Richard picks orr's pocket for goal. #3 Orr chases to the side boards leave front of net to two habs. #4 Orr again tied up on the side boards. #5 Orr coughs it up at the MTL line leads to Lemaire goal. #6 Orr day dreaming standing in front right near Ferguson but doesn't actually cover him and ...goal. One more for the finish and MTL wins the comeback 7-5. Something people often forget and this is not just about ORR but elite players often pile up points versus other bad players the TRUE sense of greatness is how players play versus the best opposition.This is also why I look forward to the WJC becayse all the elite players have to face each other this will tell me who is actually truly elite and which ones were simply piling up points versus LQ players.

Ovi was just something else back in his heyday - he was built like a tank and hit just as hard, but then he'd turn around and snipe a goal from his signature spot on the power play. His shot was just unfair - that quick release off the half-wall was basically unstoppable. And people forget he could really fly up and down the ice too. The crazy thing is he wasn't just a pure scorer - he could thread beautiful passes when he wanted to. That combination of physicality, scoring touch, speed, and playmaking... we're probably not gonna see another player quite like him. He was truly one of a kind.

Not a terrible video, but it would be helpful to contextualize...any of these accomplishments as compared to other players in the league at the time, to illustrate how great he actually was. Just so you're aware, I stopped watching when the guy you hired said Con Smith Trophy. I'd take whichever passionate fan put this video together narrating, with a cheap, crackling mic over that.

The first year he came to Boston you could get A great ticket the night of the game. The Bruins had been so bad for so long. His second year it was a lot harder to get tickets by his 3rd year forget about it. Tickets got very hard to get. I went to many games his rookie year. My favorite player at the time played the opposite of Bobby his name was Gilles Marrotte. Just saying. Those were the days indeed.
