This scene here is what started my love for Longfellow’s poetry, this is my favorite poem, I know it by heart! Also, how has it been 14 years!? I remember watching this episode when it premiered!!

James Whitmore was a wonderful character actors. I love this scene. The poem by Longfellow is "I shot an arrow into the air". Whitmore quoted the first few lines convinced that young people no longer know poetry. I do wish that I knew more.

"I don't know why I find it so difficult to express my feelings to you. Even though we are far apart, I can see you as vividly as if you were here with me. I said I'll miss you and I do. As Shakespeare more ably wrote my sentiment in sonnet 47: 'Betwixt mine eye and heart a league is took, And each doth good turns now unto the other. When that mine eye is famished for a look, Or heart in love with sighs himself doth smother, With my love’s picture then my eye doth feast And to the painted banquet bids my heart. Another time mine eye is my heart’s guest, And in his thoughts of love doth share a part. So either by thy picture or my love, Thyself away are present still with me; For thou no farther than my thoughts canst move, And I am still with them, and they with thee; Or if they sleep, thy picture in my sight Awakes my heart to heart’s and eye’s delight.' (Only the last third of the sonnet is read aloud by Grissom, but the whole sonnet is written in the letter. That's maybe close to 90% of the letter. I can't make out the first line and the end, after the sonnet.)
