I've been trying the 27 gallon bins for storage and I'm moving away from them. Their sloped sides make them much less effective to store things and their size makes it harder to find things in them. I'm actually moving more to used cardboard boxes. Their sides are straight and they can be labeled easily with a magic marker and it's easy to change sizes if the stuff I'm storing there gets bigger.

Oh, I'm so glad you spoke up about decanting. It just doesn't work for most people.
@kikow37929 күн бұрын
We have to decant because we have mice in our house. Living in a rural area, so that's pretty normal. We found nice plastic containers for us that work, and stack nicely, and go into the dishwasher. But our needs are more than aesthetic here.

This hasn’t been my experience with felt hangers, I’ve had mine for over 10 years and never had one break. I’m guessing there is variability in the quality from different suppliers though!

My wooden hangers have lasted me 20 years with no issues. But I mainly use cheap plastic hangers because most of my clothes are t shirts. But I do hang all my fancier clothes on wooden hangers

Personally, I find hanging slacks in the closet weird. I've always fold my slacks and put them in my dresser drawers. To each their own, I guess....

I’ve had plastic drawers for 20 years and have never had trouble opening mine. I don’t stack them, though, so maybe that makes the difference. I also don’t overstuff them. I have one set for T shirts and another for workout clothes. Totally agree on decanting and pants hangers. A file box on the counter in the kitchen for important papers has never worked for me. I put stuff in it and forget it’s there. And the rest sits in a pile.

I didn't know the Swedish brand Elfa (that makes metal frame drawers) was known worldwide! As the other alternative, IKEA, is swedish too, as a swede, I feel pretty proud! 😊

another problem wit decanting your food in containers is that the containers do not contain the same amount as the one your food came in and you still have food and your new container is fool and now you have 2 items to store instead of one! Forget this time consuming trend all together and store your food in a cabinet with a door!!! not everything has to be a "decor" piece!!!!

I use multi tier pant hangers for pants that I don't use often and for that they do a great job. I disagree with you, they DO safe space. They are indeed impractical for daily use, but for occational use they are fine. I have had mine for 10+ years and they did never bend (I'm from Germany, maybe the hangers you get here are more stable?). I do not have enough pants for a seperate pant rod, it would in the way with the long gowns in that closet, that would be no alternative for me.

Ever had food moths in your cupboards? The only things they cannot get into are hard plastic containers! and ones made pf glass - but they are too heavy to put them on the higher shelves and get them down successfully.
@LauraAnca15 күн бұрын
I disagree on point 2, vehemently 🤪, but very much agree with the elfa and the ikea jonaxel system. Personally I’ve only had the ikea systems, and the current one is so flexible, with narrow drawers and shelves too. They saved my sanity and was able to customize them in such a way that i solved the issues in all my three closets (with diferent purposes and challenges). It’s great for renters too bc I can reconfigure the system when I move to a new place if I need to. And it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg!

Wish I’d seen this before I bought them. Those stackable drawers , those hangers, such a waste of money and space
@anneoreilly490016 күн бұрын
In the pantry I think a lot of us “see” the packaging colors or shapes and use that to locate items in a full pantry. Decanting foods eliminates those markers making it harder to find things.
@LauraAnca15 күн бұрын
Depends. To me, there’s nothing like a label over a container that actually shows what’s inside, is stackable,and an efficient use of space, etc. I don’t have a myriad of colors and shapes to distract me from what I’m trying to find, and that is a time saver. Of course this doesn’t work for everyone, including people I know and love, but they can be incredibly practical.

Come for the advice, stay for the cat. And yeah, these pantry containers are crazy. I have jars for my legumes, but everything else stays in their packaging as everyone recognizes those packages.

Those tiered pants hangers are a huge PITA. I use small hangers meant for kids clothes; they're just wide enough for a single pair of pants.
@eltee569620 күн бұрын
Plastic drawers are rubbish. I used them when I was renting and no furniture provided. Only renting for 9 months so no use buying furniture. Rubbish because a) they sag & don't close properly b) topple easily I found copy paper boxes (from office) are better
@vc660121 күн бұрын
Decanting many items into storage containers. Not only does this take time but also tends to need more space as you have the storage container which may only be a quarter full and the replacement bag somewhere else. And the 3/4 empty area takes up space unnecessarily though of course depends on what product and storage container one is talking about.
@LauraAnca15 күн бұрын
I find so much utility from my storage containers, especially in a tiny kitchen. I can tell you for sure I can’t accommodate a full bag of something and a half filled container. Nor would I need to, bc it’s easy to see when and if I need to get more of something. Also, some systems (not all) have containers of multiple sizes, anything from a small cup to a large bag of flower. Since mine were a more affordable, bpa free system, with a lot variety in sizes, I was able to get different sizes over time, so I can use my space most effectively. All storage is a game of Tetris with a side of psychology/behavioral traits. And for some of us, bring on the containers and the labels, and we will never be stressed again when opening cabinet doors again.

Interesting list Janelle! I agree with you on most but you'll have to pry felt hangers out out of my cold dead hands!!! 😂 I used to use wood exclusively but they take up a lot of space and it's often not needed (for example when hanging button-down shirts!). I replaced most of them some 7-8 years ago with decent quality felt ones. I picked a light grey colour and none have stained my clothes and I haven't had one break yet. No one type of hanger works for all situations and that's the case for felt hangers too. I don't use them to hang-dry delicate clothes - those go on plastic hangers in the laundry room until dry then onto the felt ones for storage. This prevents any possible colour transfer. I don't use them for very heavy winter or leather coats - those go on wooden hangers because of the weight and the coats' need for support at the shoulders. I have a couple of leather/winter coats that are actually on two or three wood hangers taped together so the shoulders don't get misshapen over time! I don't use them to hang pants either - those go on rubber-coated metal clip hangers because the felt ones are designed to grip the fabric and not let it slide! If you keep those exceptions in mind, felt hangers can be a game changer in keeping your clothes storage streamlined and organised!

The decanting food thing is impossible. You always have leftover food that doesn't fit in the container, so you have to hide that bit of a bag of flour somewhere. You top up the container of pasta with a new box, but now you have mixed old and new pasta, and you have a half box of pasta that you have to hide somewhere. And when you do finish the decanted food in that container, you have to wash the container and make sure it's good and dry before you fill it up again with sugar. It just doesn't work.
@LauraAnca15 күн бұрын
I can see why it wouldn’t work for some, but for me it works fantastically, and I don’t have the issues you describe here. The workarounds aren’t that big of a deal in my experience. Plus my system of containers has many different sizes, so I can accommodate efficiently a few nuts to a whole bag of flour. I think it’s fair to say they don’t work for me (or you in this case), but it’s not fair to say that they don’t work at all, since they work really well for many.

Wood lasts way longer, you’ll have to buy plastic again when they break. So in the bigger picture plastic is a waste, wood is a more durable long lasting product.

These are all great ideas but for people with money! Where is the help for poor and broke people that can’t even afford IKEA much less Target? Do you have any remote idea how much 20 or 40 glass containers with rubber seals costs? I’m struggling to pay rent and eat like most of the people in the economy now days, we’re not dropping thousands on home organisation.

Just a suggestion, look at some products that come in those kinds of jars and ask around. Maybe friends or colleagues buy that product. I use glass bottles that coffee came in. That particular brand is very popular so everyone had one or two bottles around.

Great tips! Thanks! My biggest challenge for the new year is relocating items I have stored in top cabinets and the attic to a space on the first floor and lower cabinet shelves. My husband and I are getting to the point that climbing stairs and ladders are difficult. I want everything in the kitchen on a shelf that I can comfortably reach and all seasonal decorations in a space that does not require a two story stair climb. It will require lots of decluttering but I know I can do it!

Decanting is bad ALWAYS because when was it bought, what variety was it, what is expiration, what is lot number, don’t mix old and in same container - for product recalls , staleness, not quite similar or recognizable item differences, possibility of transferring pantry pests into new batches, emptying packages unnecessarily into containers prematurely allows premature degradation of quality. If food packaging is so ugly to you, keep it in closed cabinets or pantries. Those who decant are posers, cosplaying as real homemakers, and are more interested in pretty pictures and the praise of meaningless netizens as opposed to the health and wellbeing of their families. Look up ERGOT, you clueless decanters! I won’t cry when your family becomes poisoned due to your own moronic vanity. “Symptoms of ergot poisoning or ergotism vary but include dizziness, convulsions, and psychosis. Ergot can affect the nervous system, digestive system, or cardiovascular system, constricting the blood vessels. This can lead to gangrene, which is when tissues die due to a lack of oxygen.”
