Good set up bro but I don’t think you need 3 different knives that’s a little extra. That utility knife will cut everything you need to and when it’s dull you just throw a new blade in and don’t gotta take time to sharpen.

I’ve tried that in the past but I’ve found that having different types of blades makes it easier to do different tasks. It’s just my preference though.

Hey there! Really good question. We are actually in the process of onboarding someone who was in a similar situation as you. They started off working in the warehouse/field and were able to work their way up. If you’re really wanting to become a CPM, I’d say you try and get in where you can. There are some companies that have “FARM” programs that allow the field to better transition into a PM role. You’ll have to start entry level, but if they see you have the knowledge and skill, it won’t be long till you can get to that PM role.

Find ways to be self-reliant and not have to be given tasks. Try to anticipate that next task and execute. Also, try to be involved as much as possible in the schedule. Depending on your current role, try to implement mini schedules with your trades that are built off the overall master schedule.

Hi im from Argentina, and I don’t understand Whats the difference between a superintendent, a site manager and a construction manager. Are superintendents engineers? Or it’s more like a trade?
@TheYoungSuper
@TheYoungSuper Жыл бұрын
Honestly, it just depends on the company you work for. A site manager at one company could be the same as a superintendent at another. But generally speaking, a super is in charge of all field operations. A site manager is in charge of any logistics or deliveries for a job site. A construction manager usually oversees the construction team as a proxy for the owner. Some supers can be trade related or union, but not necessarily an engineer.

Working as a laborer right now it’s my first week, my company (frame to finish GC) has kept bringing up their interest to make me/train me into the role of a site supervisor. It seems that they really like me and my experience and are eager to train me and have me shadow site supers till I can get promoted. I think they are doing as much as they can on their part but what can I do on my part? I’m always asking questions when shadowing, or trying my best when being a laborer. Prior experience is carpentry specialist in the army, plus some certs and other laborer experience. Like I said, first week with this company but things are moving quick for me and I just wanna make sure I’m doing everything I can. Basically what would you do in my position? I want that position as quick as I can while actually learning everything I need to learn to be good at it. Any courses you recommend?

If you don’t have your OSHA 30, I’d highly recommend getting that. Google is a great resource as well. Whenever I see something I don’t know about, I do my research on it. Also, if there are any trade specific books, I’d get copies of those. I have the Ugly’s reference book and I’ve been studying that when I get free time. So just trying to absorb information where you can will really set you forward.

So I started off at a bigger firm out of college as a field engineer. From there I made a switch to a different company. Out of necessity and the scope of work, I was promoted to superintendent. I was able to show them that I can manage subs, schedule, and owner expectations. Typically at bigger firms, the road to becoming a superintendent takes more time. But given the size of the firm you work for and the scope of work you oversee, your path to being a superintendent can change. But it also can be just a short at a big firm. It just depends on how well you learn and maintain information on running a job.

Do you feel that you have a good work life, and home life balance? Going into Construction Management in college I want to know how it is, to see if this career path is for me.
@TheYoungSuper
@TheYoungSuper Жыл бұрын
It honestly depends on the company you work for. For the most part of the construction industry, you can expect 10-12 hour days. The time put in really depends on the project size. At my previous company, the project I was on was over $800M. I put in a minimum of 10 hours every day. With these big companies, there’s a culture around putting in crazy hours. But where I’m at now, if my work is done, than I’m done. So you can definitely find balance, it all just depends on the company you choose.

Just throwing some input out there. If you don't care about the "college, life style, party experience" I'd 100% recommend pick up a trade (ideally MEPs), enroll in the trade school and/or enroll in a community college that offers an Associates degree in Construction Management and work your trade during the day (or find a company that'll work with you on classes during the day) and take classes at night. At the end of the AA degree you've now got 2 years of trade experience, little to no amount of money in college debt, and can move towards a GC. You DONT need to be an expert at everything to be a GC but you definitely need to know a little about a lot. I feel like a lot of dudes in our position tend to forget WE ARE NOT the experts and we need to focus on solving problems subcontractors bring to us but also taking their input on whats the best course of action. I always tell my guys "I'm just here to help you solve problems and the easier I can make your job, the easier my job is as well so lets tackle this together"
@TheYoungSuper
@TheYoungSuper Жыл бұрын
Man I love this right here! Best comment ever. If I could go back, I would have done the trade school along with college as well. And it’s definitely a highly viable option out there for others getting started. And you’re totally right about “NOT BEING THE EXPERT” in everything. Does it help? Well hell yeah. But kind of impossible to know everything perfectly that happens in construction. But we can definitely be good at solving issues that arise when we have those experts from those trades working with us.
