My mom fried the loquat leaves to make tea and the fumes made me absolutely ill to my stomach as if someone just finished smoking 1000 packs of cigarettes in the house. It smelled so toxic and I feel I've been poisoned. I'm still suffering a fever, worst migraine, nausea, muscle aches. I had to force myself to vomit and it was bitter, sour. My mom is in full denial and said the smell is medicine. I don't feel it's medicine when I feel poisoned. Even after the fumes have settled, just the slightest scent of it, makes me so nauseous.

Go easy on raw bamboo shoots! It contains cyanogenic glycosides! The amount of cyanide might vary depending on the variety of bamboo...but be careful!

@@thereidfarm1 I'm a little bit anal about it because my wife and myself did poison ourselves with inadequately prepared shoots. Obviously we survived it, nothing serious, just feeling slightly nauseous, low blood pressure for a couple of hours...that's why I insist on making a little warning about raw bamboo shoots...

@LeChristEstRoi what variety was it that you ate raw that made you sick?
@Obsessed_With_Plants
@Obsessed_With_Plants Ай бұрын
Shanti is one of the smartest bamboo people I know in the states. She wouldn't recommend it if it was bad. And from my understanding every variety of bamboo has different levels of glycosides just like how different citrus have different levels of sugar. And unless I'm mistaken, the cyanide is what makes the shoots bitter so you can taste it. However, I'm by no means an expert in bamboo so take everything I say with a grain of salt.
@LeChristEstRoi
@LeChristEstRoi Ай бұрын
@@Obsessed_With_Plants My point wasn't to question Shanti's expertise. Let's try again: some varieties of bamboo have very low level of cyanogenic glycosides, hence they can be eaten raw, no problem...but we also need to clarify that most varieties have high enough cyanid content to make people sick if eaten raw. Paradoxically I think that the varieties with the highest level of cyanid are actually the safest! Why? Because their taste is so unpalatable in their raw state that you just won't eat them raw! Period! But some varieties have just low enough cyanid to make them almost palatable, especially if mixed in a salad with dressing and other stuffs, but high enough to make you sick! That's why I believe that we need to clarify that before eating raw bamboo shoots you need to be sure of the variety.
