Found you through Dramguard, but this is up my alley as well. I use Pathfinder 2e, but I love world building. I am hoping we get a lot of content here. Also found your World Anvil.

The rule as written strongly implies it's written incorrectly. Why? Because both "heavily obscured" and "able to be seen" are (the way you described it) assessed from the point of view of your opponents. So why would they say both? Clearly, "able to be seen" trumps "heavily obscured," making the latter completely irrelevant. The fact that they DO say both strongly implies that there *is* meant to be a difference between the two -- but neither you nor anyone else has been able to tell me what it is. So, either the "heavily obscured" section needs to be dropped, or we're misinterpreting it (understandably), or they intended the rule to be different but forgot to include the required detail. I'm so sick of having to use up my bonus action on Steady Aim just to get sneak attack: I never get to use my bonus action for anything else, and I never get to move. It's totally messed up! (Note: I'm particularly referring to Adventurers League play, where we're required to play precisely as the rules are written, even when they're written badly or incorrectly -- but it applies in Campaigns, too.)

I mean if you're behind a large object that would fully obscure you then you'd probably be okay if you're DM deems you out of sight. But youre not "hidden" per the actual sense where you're undetectable.
@SurmaSampo
@SurmaSampo Ай бұрын
@VanguardDnD That is the problem though. The DM has to ignore the rule for something that isn't even close to an edge case scenario because the rules are too tightly tuned for balance and action economy. There are just so many weird issues like this all through DnD where the rules seem to be intended as a boardgame rather than to create a fantasy roleplay experience. 4E really wrecked the design principles of WOTC and DnD.

UPDATE: Per the 2024 rules that were recently changed, Surprise is now applied by simply giving enemies affected a Disadvantage on their Initiative rolls. It's a lot simpler than the previous mechanic of losing a turn, but also a lot less beneficial to those doing the surprising. I apologize, been watching and playing a lot with the previous rules so I didn't even think about the change when I made this video. The Hide info is 100% up to date though.

pretty good but there some important distinction you failed to say and a few rule errors: hidden VS unseen VS cover: yes hiding require your action (or bonus action with cunning action rogue) but if you run in the darkness spell, you are now unseen (not hidden everyone know exactly where you are in the darkness, they all heard you) but you are unseen. and as of page 26 in the 2024 PhB, being unseen does give you advantage on your attack and does impose disadvantage to target trying to hit you. Then if my character drop prone FOR FREE (page 25 of the PhB: on your turn you can give yourself the Prone condition without using an action or any of your speed) being boxes, you are 100% right they are not hidden, everyone saw them drop prone behind the box. But they still benefit from cover (now it's up tot he DM to determine if the box cover 1/2, 3/4 or the entire body) and if the box does cover the entire body enemies cannot shoot them. IF the box cover just half the body they are still prone so the range attack is made with disadvantage and the cover bonus still give them +2AC. But the monster could indeed just walk behind the box and attack them with a melee weapon gaining advantage on their attack and no cover bonus to your AC. Now where it because a bit harder is with illusions like minor illusion. the sorcerer cast the minor illusion of a 5ftx5ft wall and the 3ft tall halfling rogue run behind the wall (he do not hide) the wall block all line of sight so it does effectively give heavy concealment to the rogue, giving the rogue advantage on his attack if he shoot through the wall. If the rogue peak on the side of the wall for his attack, the wall no longer offer heavy concealment (since the arm of the rogue holding his bow are fully visible so now the rogue would require the hide bonus action (cunning action) to hide then shoot. Bu the difficult part is TECHNICALLY the monster do not know it's an illusion (unless they succeed on a study action investigation against my spell DC or physically interact with the wall) so they believe that the wall is not providing concealment but actually cover, so the monster wouldn.t attack, since they BELIEVE it's a solid wall, but in reality it's an illusion and it offer no cover, just concealment. And if the creature ever discover that it's an illusion it then become translucide, and therefor offer no concealment neither You also got Surprise wrong: surprise in 2024, no longer give you a free turn. it JUST give the enemies disadvantage on there initiative roll. Now if my rogue is stealthy and unseen, and shoo the guard. it's still unclear When we roll initiative in this context. Do we finish the attack, and then combat then we roll for initiative the enemies with disadvantage (the rogue is no longer hidden since he attacked so he do not have advantage) Or do we roll initiative BEFORE the attack the rogue being hidden (so invisible) have advantage and the enemies still have disadvantage. Is still unclear, since if somehow the enemies still roll higher then the rogue, the attack didn't happened and the rogue is still hidden, so what would the enemies do during their turn? keep playing cards?

I hope you take this as the constructive criticism it is intended: you really need to make sure you understand the rules properly before trying to teach others. You correctly explain stealth, using the 2024 rules. And then explain surprise using the 2014 rules. Thereby simply confusing anyone using any rules
@VanguardDnD
@VanguardDnD Ай бұрын
apologies, you are correct they did change surprise in 2024 to be a simple disadvantage on Initiative rolls. I have a few different handbooks. Keeping everything straight can sometimes get fuddled in my head. So far in my campaigns this year I've continued to use the old Surprise function just bc we are all used to it the way it's been done for a decade

I’m curious about where the DC 15 came from. I figure to use the enemies’ passive perception as the starting point to see if one is hidden. Good to get different ideas on this and more clarification in general.
@VanguardDnD
@VanguardDnD Ай бұрын
So that's actually a direct quote from the Player Handbook, pg 368 in the Rule Glossary. I think the idea is that being stealthy is something that you need to have at least made an honest attempt at being good at, just like being strong and passing strength checks would require.
@IIIWITHOUTaNAMEIII

Is this something that has always been there? I also found it in the 2024 phb, but couldn’t find it in any of the 2014 rulebooks.

@majorbodyodour4820

The way I run proficiency: if you are proficient at a skill, you have passive proficiency in that skill. 8 + mod. You must still roll a d20 (1 = crit failure) but your lowest score is your passive. If you are not proficient in a skill you may attempt, but roll a d12 + mod. A nat 20 doesn't grant automatic success, it grants best possible outcome for that instance. If the wizard tries to push open a stone door, he still can't, but maybe notices a weak spot/hinge/alternative

I'm not sure that 'critical failure on a group check counts as 2' is an official rule...? it's not mentioned in the Group Checks section, unless I'm being blind lol. For that matter, TV, when you're quoting/explaining specific rules, it would help new players if you printed on screen the specific PHB/DMG page number you're referencing, so they can look it up again later.

Is it all the players involved that determine what happens in a campaign like goals and objectives and how to successfully “resolve” the whole campaign or is it the dm that establishes this all beforehand on his or her own?
@VanguardDnD
@VanguardDnD Ай бұрын
Ideally the outcomes are ANTICIPATED by your DM but not DICTATED by your DM. They should have multiple potential outcomes based on what the PLAYERS choose to do. For example I have a full campaign right now that I'm working on that has a spider web of about 8 different scenarios depending on what the players choose to do. Granted, for one-shot campaigns you don't need to consider that many contingencies. But the DM is there to help the players write a story, not the other way around.
@torridice

@@VanguardDnDI imagine as you build more and more anticipated paths the ones that end up not getting used can be recycled to the next campaign. So a lot of work up front but gets easier the longer you DM.
