NT1A the worst mic ever?
@TheRecordist3 сағат бұрын
Yes. I think it’s an awful mic, but mostly it would fly under the radar if it wasn’t for the disingenuous marketing and hype that surrounds it. It’s marketed to people new to audio with untrained ears. Also, since I started my channel 3 years ago, I have made the NT1a the villain of my channel. Mostly because it’s hilarious, but also because Røde can take it. They’re a huge company. They make some great gear, just not the NT1a.

@ I watched the Black Lion Compressor video. Your sound is a tad bit roomy. I notice the occasional peaking out. That was verified by seeing your channel 4 input meter getting really hot. Unlike the days of analog, getting as close to 0dB as possible doesn’t apply. You’d be far better served recording at -30dB and then raising then clip gain in post. I try to shoot for -18dB to -12dB with total absolute peaks going no higher than -6dB. Also you’ve got a lot of clicks and pops happening. Unsure if that’s an OBS issue or your preamp or something else. 1. Which mic and preamp were you using to do the VO part of your demo? 2. How far away from that mic were you? 3. Are you recording at 24 bits?

@@TheRecordist Thanks so much for watching/listening and providing feedback. Now you know why there's room for improvement. Much of the problem is just straight up inexperience, trying to do video recording as I learn to juggle audio & video. What is not visible in the vid is yet another track that is the actual V/O recording. I struggled with trying to capture audio, while still keeping the ability to make wild adjustments on the compressor visible in the DAW - Roomy? I'm snuggled up to my desk and large display screen, with the gear rack about a foot or two away on one side ....I think 3 sides of reflection is killing me on this. - Clicks and pops Yea, I think that's my computer stressing out trying to manage audio and several video inputs simultaneously, I gotta sort that out or upgrade my computer - Mic? That's a AEA KU5A ribbon How close? Too close, and as I move my head between looking at display screen and the BlackLion, I'm not helping 24 bit? Yes 24/48 I've go work to do. Thanks again,

@@SomeKindaHero117 hahaha. I made this video a while ago. I just watched it again. If you know absolutely nothing about audio then this might be too much. So: 1. Make sure the room you’re in doesn’t have echos and reverb bouncing around. You can add blankets and other soft absorbent material around you to stop some of that echo. 2. Pick a distance that’s about 8 inches to a foot away from the mic and try to stay within that distance while you’re talking. 3. Keep the mic off to the side but still pointing at your mouth. This allows air to move past your mic and not INTO your mic. That’s about it!

I'm a complete noob in audio, but just bought a MKH-50 to use boomed in my little workroom which is not treated for sound at all. I cannot get my new MKH50 to pick up my voice at all, unless I put over 50dB of gain on it. When I do, there is this hiss that is prevalent in the audio that I can't get rid of. So either my output is so faint that I cannot raise it without raising the noise (even with NR), or it's amped so much that it picks up this annoying hiss. Maybe I have some bad RF interference in the room. Using my MKE 600 my voice is picked up with very little gain and it sounds great and clean. My question is, should I return the MKH 50 and get a 416 because the 50 might not be for me and my environment, or could it be defective? (I tried with 2 different field recorders, a Zoom F3 and a Tascam FR-AV2. I don't own audio interfaces or a mix-pre6 etc.) The two field recorders I have are supposed to have very clean pre-amps.
@TheRecordist6 күн бұрын
Hey there. That is not normal for the MKH50. Two things to ask you before I can assist: 1. Are you using an XLR cable (three prong) from the mic to the XLR input of the recorder? 2. Have you switched on 48v phantom power? Let me know and I can then better assist you. Thanks!

I have a "Louise". I love this video but it seems that it is missing the intended application for this mic. It has a wide cardioid pattern and it was designed for picking up acoustic and vocal ensembles. By positioning the musicians accordingly, you can achieve a beautiful "mixed" sound with a single microphone. I use it for my own acoustic performances where I can stand about 18" from the mic and play acoustic guitar and sing with an excellent sound and no need for a dedicated guitar mic. I have been asked by guitarists "What guitar amp are you using?" the answer is "none". Just Louise. It does feedback like any condenser so I have to use in-ears. @@TheRecordist Thanks so much for replying. I am a UK based singer/songwriter/producer etc (rock leaning). Looking for my first professional grade mic for my home studio, which is pretty well treated. I'm looking for something of an all rounder and thought the tube saturation, plus the high and low roll off would make the LA320 great for this. I will mostly use the mic for vocal and acoustic guitar. I do love that modern forward vocal sound but also think vintage saturation is key. Most other instruments is in the box. Does this help? I would really appreciate your thoughts.
@TheRecordist5 күн бұрын
@@christopherrogers7729 the 320 has a lot of low end thump. It’s a tube mic, as you know, and requires warming up for a good 15 minutes to a half an hour before operating. Just like the old days. The Dachman I would say is more balanced and mid-forward. Hmm. This is a tough one. One last question. Do you have a mid-forward sharp voice like mine? Or a more rounded bassier tone - not deep, just more rounded?
@christopherrogers77295 күн бұрын
Thanks. I would say more mid forward. I have definitely found it hard to tame harshness at times, but not sure if that’s also the source and mic I have been using. I have definitely felt that my vocal could do with body at times whilst trying to get the modern, clear and forward sound. When I saw your LA320 review it seemed perfect for me. The sound of that over the LA220 really stood out to me. But the appeal of an affordable U87 clone definitely grabs me too.
@TheRecordist5 күн бұрын
@ then I recommend the LA320. The quest for the U87 is more fan than fare. The DA 87i is a great mic, no doubt, but it really accentuates the mids, just like a real U87 does. The LA320 is very rounded and pleasing. Also, you’d own a tube mic!
