Anyone looking to take this drive (after the road reopens from the latest landslides that is), driving South is nicer as you would be on the right side/ocean side and it's much easier/safer to use the scenic turnouts. If you do choose to do the Northbound drive, don't take the 101 up to the 46 to get to Highway 1 as shown in this video. Instead, just drive through San Luis Obispo, North on Santa Rosa Street which turns into Highway 1 after about 5 minutes. You will get to pass through the towns of Morro Bay and Cayucos, and be driving alongside the ocean about 40 minutes sooner than is shown in this video.

Traffic in Arizona has significantly worsened. I moved from Phoenix to Flagstaff back in 2014, and when I returned this year, the traffic was even worse than before. I think we need a high-speed rail from LA to Phx though.
