Aziraphale's been mostly on Earth for so long he's not seen the issues in Heaven. And since he wasn't there for the whole 'shut your stupid mouth and die already' bit he hasn't witnessed it. And I don't think Crowley told him what they did. He's still holding onto that hope that they're the good guys.

I don't think it'll be the last time Crowley will ask, but he does need to see Aziraphale's effort and willingness to reach out to him now. Before that he's always been pushing at the edge, "taking it slow" like Aziraphale had asked, hoping that one day it will result in a final nod of the head. But time ran out, he had to break the question and Heaven was still 1 step ahead of him, and Aziraphale was still not ready. Crowley has laid out all the cards he has at this point, he needs to see Azira's cards too before he could gather back the strength and encouragement to do it again. Because in Crowley's eyes Azira has already rejected him.

I landed on the same conclusion and on top of that, on my first rewatch (out of the many I did lol) I noticed that Aziraphale actually DID want to move thing forward at the end of season 2, before everything hit the fan. If you pay attention, you'll see how differently he acts around Crowley, how much he reachs out to him, the way he constantly touches him for comfort, how he starts to show his trust more, and even the whole idea of the ball, whilst obviously meant to drive Nina and Maggie together, it also served a different purpose. Aziraphale was anxious and quite nervous, because he also wanted to make an excuse, invite Crowley to dance with him and maybe something else that we missed (thanks Shax for that 😠). I don't think that he was on the verge of telling him how he feels. Probably he's not there yet even with himself. But certainly he was trying to make another step forward into their relationship. Of course, Metatron got in the middle and changed things. I'm adamant that, if Crowley had managed to say what he wanted to say before Metatron talked to Aziraphale, things would have played out so differently... The problem is this: Aziraphale still needs to work things out in his own mind and heart, all the while Crowley has all figured out, probably waaaaaay before Nina pointed out, but he chose that especific moment because hey, Gabriel and Beelzebub could do it, why can't we? And again, Crowley always goes "too fast" for Aziraphale. But yes, everything you said is 100% what's been on my mind for these two months after season 2 ended and I can't see it other way. This story, at least on the "romance" department, is told and written by Crowley. Edit: Oh, and I was forgetting to mention. This is the third time Crowley asks Aziraphale to go away with him, together. At least that we saw in screen. Maybe he even asked more times than we know of, and maybe that's why he rushed through it this time. He was desperate because now there's a chance that he loose Aziraphale for good, and on top of that, he crosses the physical line with a kiss, as a Last attempt to make his angel _understand_ what he's actually meaning with "We could have been us". Maybe he really thinks this is his Last Time, which makes my heart ache even more.

​@@harmony137I agree with everything except the last line. I don't think Crowley feels rejected. I think he knows pretty damn well they both feel the same way and always has. To me, Crowley is more disappointed than anything and sees him like a coward for not stepping up, grow a pair and actually deal with what they have as a "group of two". And it's been 6 thousand fucking years. He must feel REALLY disappointed.

@@koralinawho That's where we differ, I don't think Crowley sees Zira as a coward, more like he feels powerless because Zira is too trusting, too innocent that he can't let go of Heaven, and he still thinks and hope to fix things (tbh, that's naive of him but I won't call being good cowardly). He's inexperienced, he hasn't seen the worst of Heaven like Crowley has. It's true that he probably knows both of them feels the same, but ultimately it comes down to the final choice. When given 2 options, Zira had chosen Heaven OVER him, that's still a rejection. You rejected our future together, I am not important enough compared to your ideals and your quest. And tbh that type of rejection hurts no less. That's how I see it. And let's not forget that Zira continuously refuse to come to terms with Crowley being a demon. He loves him as he is, yes, but he is blinded by their "sides". Knowing that Zira loves him doesn't make it hurt less that he's not being able to see pass that.
