Hello sir! I have some questions about calculation. In IAL section B, there are lots of small questions in a big one. When I'm using the result I got from the previous question, I can use the one with rounded significant figures, or I can use the more accurate number. Which way is the correct way? Mean while, the mark scheme usually provides a step by step solution, for example, W=F*S, they calculate F and S separately, sometimes they use the accurate value, while sometimes they use the one with less significant figures, and they even use both ways at the same time, for example F with the accurate value, and S with the rounded one, which may lead to different result by using different methods and it is really confusing. So in the small question, if I calculated parts of the final answer, in the final calculation, which way should I use? Thirdly, the mark scheme sometimes give the final answer even less than the minimum s.f. given in the question's data. Are there a range of answers that can be accepted in Edexcel IAL, or the examiners are really strict? It's a pretty long question, and thank you so much for your patience!

1) It's better to use more accurate number than rounded one 2) Always take accurate value from the previous part to do next calculations . In this way your answer will be more accurate . 3) You won't lose marks for less or more sf if your answer can be rounded off to correct value . If question says use appropriate number of sf in final answer then you need to round off your answer to correct no. of sf . As a general rule , 2 or 3 sf in final answer are acceptable .

For division and multiplication , no. of sf in final answer should be equal to LEAST number of sf in given data or one more than least no. of sf .

Sir why the drag force on heavier ball is greater ?. Isnt drag force dependent on viscosity, surface area and speed. Please expain this
@alevelandapphysics-ali
@alevelandapphysics-ali 7 күн бұрын
When heavier ball reaches terminal velocity , weight of ball = Drag force if weight is greater so drag force should be greater and its terminal velocity will be higher if same size and falling through the same fluid . Hope it helps

Hello sir! I have a question in question 13. The question provided s=2.54m, g=9.81ms^-2, which have both 3 s.f. The answer I calculated is t=0.720s, Is it correct to ignore the last zero, and write the answer in 0.72s, then keep 2 s.f. in question (ii)?
@LucasZhang-y4m

Marks for sf are only deducted if question says use appropriate no. of sf . As long as your answer is correct and rounded off to correct no. of sf it's considered correct . Rule #1 if quantities are multiplied or divided then the final answer should have no. of sf equal to LEAST no. of sf in given data or one more . Rule#2 , if quantities are added or subtracted then the final answer should have no. of decimal places equal to LEAST no. of dp in given data . Hope it helps.

Aoa sir, for qs 14, it says that: Assume that mixing process DOES NOT CHANGE TOTAL VOLUME of liquid. Does this not mean that whatever the total volume of liquid was before miding process, it will remain same after the mixing process (we are asked to assume it) ... So should we jot take bolune of mixture as 40cm3 ?
@alevelandapphysics-ali
@alevelandapphysics-ali Ай бұрын
Mixing process does not change the total volume of the liquid means that there is no change in volume of the mixture(liquid) due to chemical reaction in this mixing process i.e. volume of mixture=volume of liquid = volume of water + volume of glycerine . Hope it helps.

Sir in qs 14 , upthrust is equal to weight of sohere and weight of string and probe displaced. Then for formula Fu = pvg It must also give us volune of sphere+probe+string displaced altogether. Reason is that even if upthrust due to string and probe are negligible, it still accounts for the volume displaced by them. Hence we shall only be taking upthrust due to wieght of sphere in order to get the volume of water paryicles displaced bu the sphere (which is equal to volume of sphere submerged) . Why didnt that gavw us correct answer?
@alevelandapphysics-ali
@alevelandapphysics-ali Ай бұрын
Upthrust due to string an probe are negligible because their volume is much much smaller than volume of sphere so their volume is also negligible . As they have weight =2.0 so total weight downwards =5.0+2.0=7.0 N so upthrust on this system =7.0 N =(V of sphere + Volume of string and probe) *density of liquid* g . As volume of string and probe is negligible so it will give us approximate answer of volume of Sphere . Weight of sphere = density of sphere * volume of sphere * g , if we have density of sphere then 5= density of sphere *volume * g . Hope it answers your question. Feel free to ask if you still have any questions .

It's ONLY correct if two filters are placed in front of vertically polarized light one makes angle of 30 degrees with vertically polarized light and second filter makes an angle of 30 degrees with first polarizer transmission axis then your calculation is correct but in this case one filter makes angle of 30 degrees with incident vertically polarized light and then second time same filter makes an angle of 60 degrees with vertically polarized light so answer should be B as i already explained in the video . Hope it makes sense . Feel free to ask if you need more detailed explanation . Cheers
