When they were in production, owners would greet others by holding up their hands showing so many fingers to indicate how many replacement engines their car had received.
@xntrcshft
@xntrcshft Ай бұрын
@@chrisst8922 More precisely: After 1970, each finger signified one time the owner had drained the car of oil to provoke an engine seizure a few hundred miles before the warranty expired. NSU received thousands of seized engines, coincidentally with mileage just under the warranty limit and topped up with fresh engine oil. The initial problems seen on early engines was solved, but the generous warranty meant customers preferred using that warranty from running their cars without one. In the short term a handy way to get a new engine, in the long term an efficient way to bankrupt a small, creative auto manufacturer. ;^)

@@xntrcshft ok so why dosnt it sell for over 100,000 dollars like rotary mazdas do? its simply not attractive in its styling, it has no character, it dosnt look tuff or cheeky, its bland. it has no racing history like rotary mazdas do, nobody relates to them, as the car they got "hooked" on rotaries on a first ride, its nothing.Rotaries are known for anoying the normies, being fast obnoxious and loud, nsu ro80 is none of that. nsu rotaries are not as collectable as mazda rotaries, they just dont cut it. i know nsu was the first , i know all about rotary history, but it was mazda who perfected them.

Flott bil! Bor du oppe i nord?

You're right. Nobody valued these cars back in the 80s. There were so many, and people had happily moved on to faster and more comfy rides. Classic car enthusiasts didn't think the Cortina was classic enough. Only by the late 90s did people start smiling and giving the thumbs up when you were out driving. Took some time to realize they were responding to the Cortina. I remember wondering why everyone suddenly seemed so happy. 🙂

The estates were very cool cars. I discovered and sold on two barn find 1500 estates in the early 90s. One from 1966 and a very early one, built in June 1963. Good solid cars. Probably both long gone now. If you don't mind a LHD, you can still find a mk1 in decent condition for around five grand in Scandinavia.

@@jgfontanez8873 Sorry, I can't make a new video, cause I swapped that car for an Rx2 a few years back. I wouldn't call it quiet. It's got a good rasp and people hear you coming down the road well before they see you, but it's still reasonably civilised. That is until you give it some proper beans uphill in 2nd. That's more like taking off in a small plane. A very literal conversation stopper, if you want. My partner was not so keen on those noise levels. I thought it was the perfect compromise. Not too exhausting (sic) on a long drive either, and I did a few. And excellent build quality, too. Recommended!

Amazing to see the interior of a 50 year old car looking like it just came off the showroom floor. Must have cost a small fortune hunting down all the NOS parts! Also interesting to see two vacuum advance diaphragms hanging off the distributor at 0:37 instead of one. I recall reading somewhere that some models have 3 sets of points packed inside the one distributor.

We have a magician who specialises in Mazda interiors. (He will do Noriaki's dashboard top, too, soon). Owner told me the Rx4 front seats have new vinyl on the sides, stitched to the patterned centers. Looks factory. Truly amazing work! Engine was built to original spec. I'm not that familiar with 13Bs, but will ask about those diaphragms...

The early non-electronic distributor 13B engines had one distributor and two sets of points. One for the trailing plugs and one for the leading plugs, as one set fires just before the other to help get an even burn. The early 10A and 12A engines actually had two distributors with one set of points in each.
@PartTimeLaowai
@PartTimeLaowai 8 ай бұрын
@@streddaz What you're describing is the normal setup on a normal old 13B, but I was refering to a bizarre setup in some 13B engines that had *three* set of points in its distributor. Re-checking just now the workshop manual of this odd version shows the ignition system is described as "one is normal leading point, another is trailing point, and the other is leading retarded point" (This description is from page 5:2 of the manual "RX-4 FSM 1975", which I see is still available in PDF version via Google). Anyone know the reason for the extra (3rd) breaker point? My guess is it's something to do with the emissions/pollution controls of that era.
@streddaz
@streddaz 8 ай бұрын
@@PartTimeLaowai I hadn’t seen that setup before. Only ever seen distributors with two sets of points. Must be for a specific region, and as you said, maybe an emissions thing.

The car was sold new in Sweden, famous for various (sometimes odd) measures to protect domestic car production against imports. For example, the 818 (808) coupé came with the Rx3 front, because headlamp wipers were obligatory. But the engine was restored in Norway. I'll see what I can find out.
