To neutralize the acidity of the flux, try using baking soda diluted in water.

You should also mention blowouts, which happen when you spend too much time on a joint, it melts all the way through and the solder falls through.

I’m planning on giving this a shot with a large Ohio flag. The only part I’m concerned about is that it needs a red circle inside a white. I feel like that’s going to be hard to do unless I split the larger one up into quarters.
@Mr.StainedGlass2 ай бұрын
Yep We would etch thst white with a red flash glass It's a clear glass with a thin sheet of red on one side If you etched through the red into the clear, it appears white without needing to use lead lines. It's pretty expensive normally made from European manufacturers You can try bendheim for some of the material

Hottest for lead free

10/24/24. I will be trying your foiling method. I suggest you hold your iron slightly off the foil and move in one direction. Usually toward you.. best of luck. I love working with glass and each project presents a learning experience. Thanks for your tips.

When you flip it over to solder the backside can the heat conduct through the foil and mess up the solder on the first side, or worse weaken the panel so it separates? Thanks so much!
@Mr.StainedGlass4 ай бұрын
It can locally melt right in that spot, but the rest of the panel will be in tact and thus won't make everything loose. You'll start heat cracking glass before melting the entire opposite side so it's not really something to worry too much about.
@williamphillips642Ай бұрын
I tend to have a heavy hand with the heat. Most of what I do is window panes. If you use higher melting point solider on the first side this will help. Offhand I don’t remember if it is 50/50 that is higher than 60/40. The 67/33 melts and solidifies at the same very narrow temperature. It hardens almost instantly which can be useful. I also think it has the lowest melting point.
@JohnKrysinski4 ай бұрын
I noticed some of your pieces weren’t ground on the grinder. I thought after even a clean cut, your were advised to rough up the glass to make the adhesive stick better. True or not? I’d prefer to not grind if I could. Thanks
@Mr.StainedGlass4 ай бұрын
Sometimes the grinder can leave glass powder, if you don't get it all off it can compromise the adhesion. You can stick without grinding. The solder really solidifies the bond between pieces

@@Mr.StainedGlass So if I have a clean nice looking break, then I can just foil after I clean it? Sounds great and quite a time saver. I’m gonna try it! Thanks

This may be a stupid question but is that regular paper underneath when you start soldering? I'm curious if it matters what material is underneath the project.
@Mr.StainedGlass4 ай бұрын
Yep. The glass will Crack long before there's enough heat to combust the paper If you set the iron straight down onto the paper, it'll burn 🤣

It looks like you are only using the glass cleaner and steel wool to clean -- I'm curious, does the glass cleaner also neutralize the flux? And, does it have to be an ammonia-based cleaner for that reaction to take place? Thanks

Beautiful pie for a wonderful cause. Question. Can’t glass be cut with a laser to save time? P.S. just got a delivery from your company 10 days ago. Regards, Albert
@Mr.StainedGlass5 ай бұрын
Hey Albert, the more common modern method is normally water jet cutting. I'm not too familiar with lasers at all though. Hope everything arrived okay! 👍
