Bach, composed 16 Präludien for organ in outstanding quality. These works are not as popular as it should be in my opinion. Kittel was born and died in Erfurt. He first studied with Jakob Adlung. He moved to Leipzig in 1748 where Kittel was a favorite - and the last - student of Johann Sebastian in the last two years of Bach's life. In 1751 Kittel was appointed organist and teacher in Langensalza, 1756 Kittel returned to Erfurt to become organist of the Barfüßerkirche. In 1762 Kittel moved to the Predigerkirche in Erfurt. Kittel refused many generous offers and stayed in Erfurt for the rest of his life. In 1790, Kittel received an invitation from Duchess Anna Amalia of Saxen-Weimar to travel to Italy, but Kittel stayed in Erfurt for the rest of his life. He played many evening recitals there and became famous as a virtuoso organist, which you can hear in his Preludes, one of which has now been uploaded to KZbin. Goethe, Herder, and Wieland all went to his concerts to hear him play. Kittel made a concert tour to Hamburg in 1800. He stayed in Hamburg for a year to work on the chorale book for Schleswig-Holstein. Kittel was influenced by the contemporary gallant style. In that gallant style, the emphasis was on melody. It is extremely fascinating to listen to this Präludium inC major, where Kittel masterfully captures this Galant ideal.

Gottfried August HOMILIUS was born in Rosenthal bei Königstein, Sachsen, on 2 February 1714. Johann Adam Hiller, a student of his - Cantor from Thomaskirche, Leipzig, and Gerber, in his "Tonkünstlerlexikon", and Forkel (Bach biography, 1802) tells us that HOMILIUS studied with Johann Sebastian Bach. This is doubted because Bach did not write the important recommendations when in 1741 Homilius applied as organist to the position of organist of the Saint Peter's church in Bautzen. The recommendation was not sent by Bach but by a student of Bach, Johann Schneider. Homilius was rejected. In 1742 he became organist of the "Frauenkirche" in Dresden. (Wilhelm Friedemann Bach also applies for this position) Homilius was involved in the planning for this famous instrument made by Gottfried Silbermann, with a disposition of 43 registers, inaugurated by Bach himself, in 1736. In 1755 he was appointed Cantor of the "Kreuzkirche" and also music director of both churches, plus the "Sophienkirche". HOMILIUS was greatly appreciated for his good taste. Moreover, he was generally recognized as a great composer and he was also famous as an organist. Homilius enriched the organ literature with some beautiful choral preludes for organ solo. The now recorded, 'Hilf, Herr Jesu, lass gelingen' has become one of the most beautiful and original choral preludes of his time. The left-hand plays the choral melody, while the right-hand plays a fast [contra] musical line. HOMILIUS died in Dresden on June 2, 1785, and left a great oeuvre, including for organ 67 choral preludes and various trios. #willemvantwillertbaroque #willemvantwillertshorts

#keesvaneerselwillemvantwillert Kees van Eersel improvised in 2006 at the invitation of Willem van Twillert. Kees improvised on his own free themes, a MODERN SUITE and a galant Suite. Kees van Eersel has more than responded to this invitation. The Bätz organ in Harderwijk particularly inspired Kees. Kees shows a wealth of forms of improvisation. Here you can hear how original Kees can handle the form as well. Kees is known for his ability to improvise in any style. This 1827 organ by Batz inspired Kees van Eersel. Later, Kees said, "Improvisation on this organ almost came naturally to me." This time no chorale melody but a free form. The diversity and contrasts of the four parts continue to fascinate; even after listening to it several times.
