**PROPHET AND SAHABA NEVER USED CALCULATED PRAYER CHARTS** Many scholars initially opposed the idea of calculated prayer charts, but later they acquiesced due to prevailing circumstances. It's worth noting that the Prophet never resorted to calculating prayer times. The Prophet and Sahaba were unable to calculate daily prayer times, so they measured shadows , also determined Fajr time by checking white and black threads of dawn. He only suggested using calculations for Prayer when the day is too long. The word "Faqdiru Lahu" used in a hadith related to the time of the coming of the Dajjal instructs to calculate prayer times when a day is too long. قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَسَنَةٍ تَكْفِينَا فِيهِ صَلاَةُ يَوْمٍ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ قَدْرًا ‏"‏ “That day which is like a year, will the prayers of one day suffice us?' He said: 'Make an estimate of time (and then observe prayer).” - [Sunan Ibn Majah Hadith 4075, Riyad as-Salihin - Hadith 1808] This is not a command to find sunset/sunrise using calculations, as he was talking about a context where the daytime is too long. They could calculate and split the time and set a calculated sunset/sunrise irrespective of the actual position of the sun. In contrast, he used the word "sighting" (Ra'a) in regards to finding Maghrib time to break the fast. "ثُمَّ أَوْمَأَ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى الْمَشْرِقِ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ اللَّيْلَ قَدْ أَقْبَلَ مِنْ هَا هُنَا فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ ‏.. ….and pointed with his hand towards the East, saying, "When you see the night falling from this side, then a fasting person should break his fast." - (Sahih al-Bukhari 5297 Book 68, Hadith 46) Also, the Quran suggested using the APPEARANCE (sighting) of the white and black thread of dawn: أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَيْلَةَ ٱلصِّيَامِ ٱلرَّفَثُ إِلَىٰ نِسَآئِكُمْ ۚ هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَّكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَّهُنَّ ۗ عَلِمَ ٱللَّهُ أَنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَخْتَانُونَ أَنفُسَكُمْ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَفَا عَنكُمْ ۖ فَٱلْـَٰٔنَ بَٰشِرُوهُنَّ وَٱبْتَغُوا۟ مَا كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۚ وَكُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ ٱلْخَيْطُ ٱلْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ ٱلْخَيْطِ ٱلْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ ٱلْفَجْرِ ۖ ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا۟ ٱلصِّيَامَ إِلَى ٱلَّيْلِ ۚ وَلَا تُبَٰشِرُوهُنَّ وَأَنتُمْ عَٰكِفُونَ فِى ٱلْمَسَٰجِدِ ۗ تِلْكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِ فَلَا تَقْرَبُوهَا ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ “…And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn appears to you distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast till the night appears…” (Quran 2:187). Presently, we do not adhere to this text literally but rather in spirit by following watches and calculated timings. If we take this Quranic command literally, we can never make use of prayer charts for Fajr prayer or to start fasting. Following these specific commandments strictly without considering their essence has never been the true objective of Islamic Law. The aim of Islamic Law is to ensure the fulfillment of the goal of time certainty prescribed by Allah SWT and His Prophet (s). So, even though the Prophet and the Sahaba never used or suggested using calculations, after many discussions and disputes over the centuries, we have all embraced calculations for prayer times due to the following reasons: a. Easiness of use. b. Calculations are more accurate than natural methods. c. Need of the time For those who claim that Muslims during the Prophet's era were able to calculate the movements of the sun and moon, but still didn't use that knowledge to calculate the commencement of the Islamic months, we need to clarify that the Prophet also never used or suggested calculations for prayer times during his time. You will be surprised that there is a clear and authentic Hadith directly reported from Prophet(s) asking for calculation when the moon is covered. لاَ تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوُا الْهِلاَلَ وَلاَ تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ فَإِنْ أُغْمِيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ “The Prophet (s) mentioned Ramadan and said,” Do not fast until you see the Moon and do not break the fast until you see it. Estimate it in case it is obscured from you.” ( Sahih Muslim 1080a Book 13, Hadith 4, Bukhari, Musnad Ahmad) Also, Hadith scholars confirmed that the direct report from Ibn Omar through Imam Malik only contains "Faqdiru Lahu" and does not contain "Akmilu", akmilu was added over time when exchanging the Hadith from person to person. The practice of Ibn Omar also proves this, he used to fast early on doubtful days. (AL-MUWATTA : 18.1.1, 18.1.2, Abu Dawud: 2312) Gumma (غُمَّ)/Gumiya (غُمِىَ)/Ugmiya (أُغْمِىَ): These terms mean "covered," "veiled, “obscured”, " or "concealed" by clouds, dust, fog, or no moon effect due to new moon/conjunction, preventing the moon from being seen from the earth. Nowadays, we can overcome environmental barriers such as clouds, dust, and fog. Therefore the new moon is the most relevant factor in this context. Some people argue that while prayer times can be calculated accurately, it is not possible to accurately calculate the beginning of the month, and thus it cannot be calculated. However, how do we calculate Fajr Sadiq (True dawn)? Is it very accurate? There are varying opinions on when true dawn begins-some say it starts at 18 degrees, others at 15 or 12 degrees. The key here is to agree on a standard, whether it is for prayer times or the beginning of the month. If the people of a country agree that Fajr begins at 18 degrees and perform the prayer accordingly, no one complains that the white thread of the morning is not visible at that time. Similarly, if a standard is accepted by the Muslim community for the beginning of the month, then no one should feel the need to look at the sky to determine whether the month has started, nor should anyone consult the crescent visibility chart and question its accuracy. The real aim is not to see the moon or calculate its visibility, but to know when the month has started. Even if all the people in a country are blind, they still need to start the month. Those who live in regions where the sun does not set for six months will not be able to see the moon during that period. They also need to start the month. The rotation of the moon around the earth does not stop just because we do not see it or declare it! Insha Allah, we can pray for a time when Muslims around the world unanimously adopt calculations for starting the Islamic months as well.

Assalaamoalaikum ww. I feel.that the mass of Muslims do not have the basic knowledge from Quran and Sunnah of what are the shariah rulings with sighting the Hilaal. This is why Muslims of the UK follow their local masjids regardless whether the moon is sighted or not. Ignorance on this topic is astonishing. On top of this the masjid committee in majority of the masjids again are ignorant on the knowledge of Hilaal. Lastly unfortunately there is influence of people in high places and foreign countries which is not allowing the true Hilaal practice to be established. Even though Fatwa from mufti's have clearly stated not to follow the Hilaal of that country. Unfortunately until the above is addressed and rectified the True following of the Quran and Sunnah and implementing shariah will not in my view be possible. We need Scholar's to educate the Muslims of this country by talks and literature so they can correct the method of their local Masjids. Allah knows best. Waalaikumassalaam

Why do our mosques in London depart from the Quran and Sunnah and follow Saudi’s supposed moon sighting? How do we follow Quran and Sunnah without disengaging from our local mosques?
