I am American and just found Lee Mead and this song. It's so beautiful! Is it a patriotic song for the UK? It's June 2020, and all hell is breaking loose. Riots everywhere. Every nation needs to raise their voices in song for love of country! Show live and be thankful.

as opposed to boning up on grammar, Lee Mead really should bone up much more on Judy Garland. He has a sweet voice, decent power (not quite enough for this song), but he has a good command of what he is able and not able to do vocally. He does need to open up his sound more, it will evoke his soul, and get the sound out of that whiny Eponine Le Miz caught in your nose, and is really dreadful. He does okay with acting the song, but has needs to understand what the lyricist wrote. Most singers when they sing this song ignore how brilliant the lyricist of Chess was/is. "Powers may Prevail" is to drumbeat consonants in very close proximity, this is a magnificent opportunity for a vocalist to act and shine, but often times these (and this song has a fair amount of interesting sounds to be played with and acted out) in this song the vocalist simply (and sadly) choose to simply sing this song, not act it out, with there voice being an instrument to bridge the music and lyrics. For many vocalist there are so worn out from the last few lines that they simply hold that last note out loud, boring. The word heart is a beautiful word, and if a vocalist takes a breath between my (what) heart (and starts loud, and decresndos all the way thru to the last beat, it a powerfully majestic way to end this song. I know this, because when i used to sing it, I would do for friends of mine in the Broadway community, and if a performer has the technique and strength to do this, the ending is so much more dramatically heightened. Again many things go back to Judy Garland. After listening to Lee do the traditional dumbed down tra la la la version of Any Dream will do (and yes i did see Bill Hutton on Broadway who outshines any other Joseph I have watched or heard), I went back to listen to Judy do As Long As He Needs Me, and what she does with a song both musically and with the lyrics is nothing short of (to quote James Mason about Judy Garland) "Profoundly Amazing" And do not get me wrong, I did happen to like Lee singing this song (not head over heels in love, but did like it), but I do believe with the right training, and if he works at it, he is capable of being so much more as a performer.

I remember when Rachel got voted off "I'd Do Anything" and had to sing "As Long As He Needs Me", I'd never heard a musical performance like it in my life - the conviction, the heartbreak and she KILLED the parting moment so much so that you can hear the orchestral players just go for it. The audience was in tears, the competitors were in tears and the judges were in tears. It's on KZbin kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmKseoWQaZt2ipY . I didn't think anyone could beat the Idina Menzel performance, until now.

why are people hating on their british accents? if they're on west end they're not gona sing it in an American accent are they? and of course they're going to do it in a London-ish type accent, would you rather them do it in a broad Yorkshire accent? no, didn't think so :)
@RizwanJaganiViolist8 жыл бұрын
I think Rachel sounds better with the British accent :) her voice resonates more naturally

She's a great singer, she really is, but her accent rubs me up the wrong way... 'If it turns out it's over too farst, I'll make every larst moment larst'. It irks me in ways that it shouldn't.
@skootahgal8 жыл бұрын
+MeYoosername it's because she's performing in the West End on Broadway she sings with an American accent. She has neither an English nor an American accent since she's Irish but depending on where she is performing she alters the pronunciation and dialect to make Elphaba's character more realistic and fit in with the setting.

I'm from the UK though and it's still annoying.

Good performance but awful camera work. Too many cuts and constant camera motion is enough to make you motion sick.
