Amazing, every part contributes to the enchantment. The music is pure magic, as a flute player I was deeply impressed. I teach in an arts camp and shadow puppets are being considered as an activity. But regardless, I want to try my hand at this art form. Already started a story after hearing watching the first part. Thanks for the inspiration.

Caroline, I watched this! I also like Mythology. I think that I’ll watch all of your shadow puppet shows later. I’m not selling anything online and I didn’t help develop the computer game. Do an internet search for Apotheon. Please watch the 1 minute video with the sound on. It’s a Greek Mythology shadow puppet-style computer game! I can see how it reminded me of your video. I think that it was on February 4 of last week, that I saw an episode of “America’s Got Talent: The Champions” that you’ll probably love. Watch, "Attraction: Shadow Dance Group Tells Emotional, EPIC Story:" at kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJjSk4J_iL2ifNU and then "Kseniya Simonova: Sand Artist Gets Terry Crews' Golden Buzzer:" at kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKekZHqdh8d9f8k . The silhouettes, optimism, and storytelling remind me of you, Caroline!

Hi Its amazing what you've created. Im from Indian and am trying to put up a shadow show, would greatly appreciate your help. What is the material that you use for your puppets , and the mechanism to hold it? secondly the floor that one sees on the screen 9the black and white squares) is that attached to the screen? are the puppets then operated at a distance ? please could you reply urgently. Thanks here's my id [email protected]

Reshma Shetty Hi Reshma Thanks for your comment! I am pleased to see that you enjoyed my own interpretation of a form of art which has a big tradition in your country! Now some technical elements: I use simple black poster board (like cardboard or very thick paper) for the puppets and sets. I draw them and cut them with an X acto knife. I use bamboo skewers attached perpendicularly with black artist tape or duct tape to the puppets .If you attach the stick perpendicularly instead of the traditional way (i.e.vertical and flat taped on the puppet), the audience will not see the sticks. It is a problem though if you need to flip the puppet to go in the opposite direction, If you want the puppet to walk in the other direction, you need to go off screen and change your puppet for another puppet , same design, but facing the other direction. That means if you plan to have several characters walking in different direction, you will need 2 puppets for each characters...that can be overwhelming behind the screen! I sometimes create an hinge at the base of the puppet which allow the puppet to flip on screen but it is quite hard to explain by email! The set rest on a small shelf and is almost touching the screen. In order to have the set stay, it is reinforced with bamboo sticks at the back so it stays vertical. The puppets move just behind the set very close to the screen also. The closer you are to the screen, the more defined and crisp the image will be. The further away your puppets will be from the screen, the bigger and more blurry they will appear. Now for the light and the screen, it depends of the size of the room you will perform: In a small room (classroom for example), a simple spotlight will be enough as long as your room will be dark (no other source of light in the room which could disturb your play).I did show with a 60 watt simple household spotlight and it worked perfectly! If you can, choose a 500 watt (you will need a ceramic socket so the socket does not melt!) you can find these in hardware store very cheap, a 500 watt can be found in any photo/video store and cost $2.5! it is hot and you would not stay 3 hours under it but it gives a nice and crisp image! Put it on a light stand above you at about 4 feet from the screen.Kneel or seat on a kid chair ..The idea is that you do not want to be between the light and the screen of course, otherwise you will cast your own shadow on the screen! If the light come a little bit from above, the audience will not see your hand, will not see you and most of the time will not see the sticks of the puppets, if your lamp is well centered. For the screen I use white spandex. Any tight woven fabric will work. Cotton and muslin work also but the advantage of the spandex is that it does not show the weaving, structure, it can stretch ( so you have no wrinkle on the screen), it let the light pass trough but does not show the light bulb too much (if the audience is not seating too far). Do not stretch it too much otherwise audience will see the light bulb through it or could even see you! The further away the audience is seating the more the light bulb show! If you plan to perform in a bigger room where the audience is seating far, then you will need professional material and bigger puppets: a theatre or movie lamp like a mini Mole (fresnel lens) instead of a regular light bulb. a screen for rear projection (type twin white by Rosco) These type of lamp and screen allow to perform further away from the screen with still a very crisp image. That give you possibility to play with perspective (a giant head with a tiny puppet in hand for example) by placing the puppets at different distance of the screen. You cannot do that with spandex and regular light bulb because the image is too blurry if you place your puppet at more than 5 inches from the screen. I hope all these info are helpful and clear. I have been putting up shows for several years for schools, museums, private parties... and I am sharing with you (or any artist willing to perform for others!) the result of years of experimentation with light fabrics and diverse material! If you find something new please share it with others !! Good luck an let me know how it worked! Best and create some beauty! Caroline Borderies PS: I have uploaded other shows...check them out! and also If you are based in New York I have 3 shows coming up : 2 in October and 1 in December If you are in Europe I have one in Paris in July....Let me know if you want to be in my mailing list!
