Funny, those Detroit Diesels look a lot like EMDs.

The power of these tow boats is amazing. With all that power must be a hoot with no barges attached! Bit like a dodgem car but on water.

When talking in a lock no one says to the left or right. They say port or starboard. But most of the time they say how far above or below the long wall and how wide in feet

Towboats are still the most efficient haulers and use way less fuel than all the trucks used to haul the same amount of cargo.

Just to upgrade a single lock. They would have to build a longer one on the other end of the dam so the old one could still be used during new construction.

Those diesels are definitely Detroits. Back when, they'd have been called Clevelands, but now EMDs. Just FWIW.

Those are not Detroit brand engines ,,those are known as EMDs built by GM , maybe in the city Detroit ,,very reliable engines hands down,I'm not sure but I think there more than 4000 horse power also

If this is such a profitable venture then the tow companies need to perform the work to reap the reward such as was originally done on the Ohio River. Your statistics are not quite the complete picture. You are missing ownership and maintenance of the rivers and locks as well.

EMDs are not Detroit Diesels. also you may want to run a calculator over the number of hours claimed in a 'towing season', there's only 8760 Hrs in a year.

Not all genetically modified plants are bad. We've actually been genetically modifying crops for hundreds if not thousands of years and you should probably educate yourself before spewing bullshit all over the web.

The Panama Canal is opening its new larger locks in 2016. And Egypt expanded the Suez Canal to reduce trip times from 18 hours to eleven hours ! Why cannot the United States invest in itself with the twelve hundred foot locks ? Is this a sign of poor leadership ? Or poor leadership picking poor managers ! Thank you for this great video ! tjl
@timlipinski25719 жыл бұрын
As of July 2015 the Panama Canal is filling one of the new locks with water to test. The new locks opening has slipped from 2014 to 2016 ! So are there any updates on the 1200 foot locks on the Mississippi River ? I have read that the West Coast Ports pay a port tax for improving the shipping for the ports; but the money is going elsewhere ! Thank you for this old info; but do not think things have changed ! ! ! Eyes UP and lights down, tjl Sent by Win7Pro64 w/ADSL

It appears to me the most sensible approach is to only take as many barges as can be locked without being broken up to St. Louis then assemble the larger tows for the lower Mississippi. This would save a lot of time. If it takes 45 minutes to lock a tow without being broken, and about 3.5 hours if the tow is broken and reassembled then on average 4 and 2/3 tows could be locked in the same time speeding up traffic.
@brandonphillips1067 жыл бұрын
Roy Reynolds I've spent the last 12 years working on the Mississippi River and it takes an hour an 40 min on average to lock a 15 barge tow through and upper Mississippi River lock. This guy's facts are off. also to do what you propose would be too cost prohibitive. To do what you suggested and make money these companies would have to invest in smaller boats and a lot of them and then the cost of crewing the extra boats would be a nightmare not to mention the maritime industry in this country is already short 70,000 Mariners. The current system works. Could it be better, sure. Will it get better, not likely. Good example is the Olmsted lock and dam project on the Ohio River.
@royreynolds1089 жыл бұрын
NOBODYDUFUS is correct that any lock constructed will be filled. The replacement of 600-ft locks on the Ohio was accomplished by enlarging one lock then because the other locks were smaller the rest were enlarged to match. This was started on the Mississippi at Alton Dam where the scheme was caught in the middle 70's. The Ohio locks were originally built and operated by shipping companies. All of these statistics can be manipulated to show just about anything you want to justify. Most of this grain starts out on railcars and moved in unit trains to ports on the Mississippi which can just as easily be routed to Gulf ports directly(quit a lot is anyway). The railroads pay for their own land, track, maintenance, etc. without tax dollars taken from us. By this method travel time is only two or three days instead of one to two weeks. I have witnessed the selfserving and always something to build USACofE. The best thing they have ever done is the Waterways Experiment Station scale map of the Mississippi drainage basin for predicting floods.

well its not just the fact of building new locks for commercial traffic alone, who can benefit from a lock that doesnt work or is unsafe to use? Look up "C.Q. Princess Markland Lock" , the gate failed (no towboat involved at a 40 year old lock... If the structure is in need of replacement why not make them bigger to accomadate the tows? and as an expericened mate on towboats, moving 22,500 tons of cargo on an everchanging river is a little more complicated than one might think...
@gobigblue91113 жыл бұрын
lol if I heard a deckhand talk like he did 'making a lock' I would walk over and smack the radio outta his hand and take over, comon ppl reserch a little!! left and right does not exist on any professional workboat....port and starboard!!

Left & right are directions. Port & Starboard are sides of the vessel.
