Happy New Year. Enjoying your videos. Just a thought on the voles. I caught several in my greenhouse using mouse traps baited with peanut butter. Solved my problem thankfully. Wishing you a successful gardening season.

Thank you, glad you are enjoying the videos 🙂. I have caught many voles in the past in the same way, but there are just so many here it doesn't seem to make a difference, I'm hoping the owls and fox that hang around will help, especially now it's finally got cold.

Is the stock fence for support? I see a lot of people doing that and I’m just wondering how it works? Is it better than using string and netting? How do you support the taller growing flowers like snaps? X
@stemsbysuzanne5 күн бұрын
yes its stock fence, I have used odd bits here and there for a long time, but last year I decided to invest in covering a larger area, and I am pleased I did, I will need to invest in more again this season, but I am confident it will be worth it. I will put some clips of me doing this in a future video, but basically I cut it so that I leave sharp edges that i then poke into the ground, then it simply supports itself. I support all my flowers with one layer of stock fence and a higher layer of string, you can see an example on my video Early August Cutting Garden Tour at 15.49. Happy growing🌺

Great video, Suzanne. Looks like you've been really busy. I am so excited as I took on an extra allotment plot in October and I intend it to be for fruit and flowers. I am looking forward to being able to grow all the flowers I love and that need slots of sun, as I've run out of space in my garden and also, because of neighbour's trees, lacks sun in some areas, despite my garden being south facing! I bought some bargain peony tubers. I know they won't flower for a couple of years, but so worth the wait. I grew Canterbury bells this year but they have remained rather small- i think I too planted them out rather late. Wishing you a wonderful New year and following you in your garden. Happy growing 🙂
@stemsbysuzanne5 күн бұрын
I can imagine you are very excited about your allotment growing space, I can remember how I felt when I started building my cutting garden, its a great feeling. Although the tough decisions over what I have room to grow starts now. My Peonies, have been so abused I wonder if I will ever be able to cut from them, but one day I am sure we will both have beautiful peony blooms. Have a great time planning your new allotment, wishing you much success.

I am not keen on shrub roses as I have found many have weak stems and the flowers tend to droop downwards. I must be doing something wrong? Maybe harder pruning? I have the timeless roses. I haven't found mine to have a strong fragrance. They do smell but not strongly.My favourite of the 4 is cream. I found the Charisma and Purple to be of a similar colour but the flower forms are different. Maybe it was down to the poor summer last year? I have grown mum in a million which smells gorgeous. I love Just Joey. My mum always had it in her garden, Beautiful rose. I love all the Queen Elizabeth roses- lovely shaped bush and gorgeous flowers. I have just ordered apricot Queen Elizabeth. Can you recommend a good thornless, very fragrant rose for cutting. I have Zephirine Drouin. Thank you Suzanne. happy gardening 🙂PS The timeless roses are nt that thorny. I cut them and no issues with thorns. Hope that cheers you 🙂
@stemsbysuzanne24 күн бұрын
No, I seem to find that my shrub roses in the cottage garden do just that, I think perhaps I should stick to hybrid teas. I am disappointed to hear that your timeless roses are not highly scented, they may end up in patio containers after all. Yes Mum in a million was another one of the roses recommended during the talk, and I am still keen on a just joey, i just require a larger garden😊. I am pleased that your timeless roses are not to thorny thats a positive and certainly cheers me up. I have climbing rose golden showers and iceberg, both fragrant and thornless, but terrible vase life, so no recommendations, I still really rate champagne moment very highly and its not to thorny. Happy growing🌺

I have just finished planting out 6 beds of dahlia tubers on my new farm here in Adelaide South Australia, and we are about to have 3 or 4 days of 38°c-42°c. My flower farm is in an old market garden paddock, which is subject to high winds and the baking sun, so the race was on to mulch and net - to stop the mulch from blowing away. I previously had about 14 out of my 300+ tubers poking shoots through until two unexpected hot days baked them off, so fingers crossed that they get the chance to reshoot again now. Your new roses look gorgeous, and I'm so glad that you didn't sustain any really serious damage in that storm.
@stemsbysuzanne23 күн бұрын
Very challenging growing conditions for you, I certainly hope your tubers sprout again soon. The summer in the Uk is so variable it is difficult to know what each year will bring. Wind is definitely the most difficult for me as it can snap so many stems of established plants, so I hope the wind is kind to you. Happy growing🌺
