Runway 5 is used during one of the rare Santa Ana wind conditions occurring a couple times during the year.

Very nice intro to the airport. Couple of points to add... * Interesting that the video starts by explaining the pilot flew left traffic to 25, but then later - correctly - points out that traffic to 25 should be a right hand pattern. (Stuff happens.) I think they just want you to avoid flying over town. As well, though it's not listed anywhere I've seen, I recall something about noise abatement and they prefer to try to stay higher if possible over the wildlife areas to the east. (Though not quite sure how this is possible given that if VFR chances are you're not much over 1,000' in the pattern on that side of the runway.) * This is all personal preference, but when leaving this airport, or Block, or the Vineyard, etc., I like to climb a bit and get flight following from Cape Approach before heading over the water.

Thanks for the video. The airport is now called San Martin, and it is now class E and no 100LL.

Just a semantics thing: In the USA, runways with a single digit are spoken, "Runway 5, Runway 6, Runway 7..." not Runway Zero Five, Runway Zero Six, Runway Zero Seven. Don't know why. Nice video though.

Being a student pilot, kinda interesting making that call right when you take-off and asking to either land or go thru their airspace. Hoping they do not say no or not give me my call sign. Not a lot of options to avoid if no two way radio contact.

Yea right. I had to do that taking off from REI. I am a student pilot. A forever student pilot as I an not get a Check-ride.

@@sircrapalot9954no. Thats not what the graphic or video shows
@sircrapalot99542 ай бұрын
@@FightBofA 1:35 The graphic shows right traffic for 32. Their approach was like a 3mi straight in to 32 after overflying the airport. If the traffic pattern is empty a straight-in is an acceptable, although discouraged, procedure (AIM 4-1-9). Traffic pattern rules apply for aircraft joining the pattern, not for straight in approaches. Just curious, what’s your flying experience at uncontrolled airports?

Straight In VFR approaches like the one demonstrated in this video are a major safety concern for this Class G airport. VFR pilots flying into Petaluma Municipal Airport are strongly encouraged to review AC 90-66C Non-Towered Airport Flight Operations www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/AC_90-66C.pdf Section 9.2 of AC 90-66C advises: "Fly the Standard Traffic Pattern. Arriving aircraft should enter the airport’s traffic pattern at traffic pattern altitude and avoid straight-in approaches for landing to mitigate the risk of a midair collision. See the paragraphs below and paragraph 11 for additional information." Petaluma is a very busy General Aviation airport at it is not unusual to have 3 or more aircraft in the pattern. Flying the pattern and communicating your location is critical. There is a very active flight training operation at the field. There are a wide variety of aircraft operating at the field including ultralights, autogyros, antique aircraft and small jets. Not all aircraft are equipped with radios, and not all aircraft will show up on ADS-B. Please review the AC and fly the traffic pattern (right pattern for Runway 29, left for Runway 11) if you are planning to land at Petaluma.

You did all that work 3 years ago and no comments? Well... hope this will start some more. Great video on how to get there. Venice can be tricky with that right pattern on 13. Glad you were able to point that out. People flying in should know that there are a bunch of people who may not be as attentive to safety there as they should. So ears open head on a swivel. No control tower. Flying out on 23 at night might as well be on instruements due to the loss of horizon. Be careful. Trust your instruments. Great food at the restaurant vibrant atmosphere. Owner is a great personality. Thanks for your video. We are going there today April 12 2024.
