I am Italian 🇮🇹but my mother when I was child told me that I had a nordic character (in Italy this means: less chaotic, tidy, maybe more loyal, reliable, a little bit more serious). So basically I had some habits that were weird in this context. I hate Italian queues because they try all the time to surpass you. I don't love to eat pasta because my father ate 200g spaghetti at lunch and at dinner for years until my mom rebelled! But I stare a lot, I think 😊, and I can't do anything for this.

What was the Blitz? Well imagine 9/11 every single night for hours on end for over 8 months. Fun fact the former king Edward VIII of Edward and Mrs Simpson fame told the Germans to carry on the bombing as it would make Britain surrender.

My grandad WW1 veteran joined the ARP as a warden. On one night in the blitz he was sent to London to help in the rescue efforts of civilians. He returned two days after and my grandmother said he looked like a ghost and did not speak for the rest of that day and never spoke of his experience.

I don't think that many Americans appreciate just how much the UK was on the Front Line during World War II. Just take a look at the figures for CIVILIAN war fatalities ON HOME GROUND in the two countries and you will get the picture: USA Hawaii*: 68 (Pearl Harbor Attack) Alaska* (Aleutian Islands Campaign, 1942 - 1943): 18 (2 civilians killed, 16 died in captivity) The 48 Contiguous States: 6 (Balloon Bomb, Oregon) TOTAL: 92 * : Although Hawaii and Alaska were not actual US States during World War II they are included for completeness. Also the US TERRITORIES US Territory of Guam: 13 US Territory of Wake Island 168 US Territory of The Philippines: 343 TOTAL: 524 COMBINED TOTAL: 616 UNITED KINGDOM 70,000+ (Largely due to German bombing raids, V1 and V2 attacks). That is roughly 1 in every 680 UK civilians. About 40,000 of those were in London and the surrounding areas. If you pro-rata that up to take into account the larger population of the USA at that time it would equal nearly 250,000 American civilian deaths due to enemy action over the now 50 States (or over 600,000 now!). Not the 92 who actually did die that way.

I keep commenting as you go through this video… Sorry for so many individual comments, but the idea of slowing down in the winter and regrouping and becoming a little bit more introspective is something that I actually appreciate about winter. I practice Hygge- which is like a Danish concept of making a cozy space or a cozy home and doing things with family and taking time to just enjoy small things in a meaningful way. I know it’s something that can be practiced year-round, but I personally associate it with winter where I’m trying to find a cozy place to read a book or be introspective and quiet

My childhood home in south London had shrapnel scars, the houses at the end our our street 100 yards away were completely flattened killing 22 people. The dark humor was passed on to us 50s / 60s kids that's why we're a sick bunch of bastards. There's a beach near Liverpool that was used to dump rubble from the bombings, it's still there, partially eroded over the years. 😅😅 Shame the UK go so friken soft.

My home city of Norwich (in the east of England) was bombed in 1942 - around 340 people died (often whole families as they were in the same shelters). 2/3 of the buildings in the city were damaged. My 15 year old Mum helped man a water hose, and her family (including my granddad who was in a wheelchair) shared a shelter that they made themselves with 3 neighbouring families. My Nan kept a record of every air raid on Norwich in a notebook.

My mother was a volunteer fire warden. The fact that people in the USA don't know of the Blitz is a very sore point in the UK, particularly when some Americans talk about "when we won the War" ; the USA didn't join the Second World War until December 1941, when Japan attacked and Germany declared War on the US.
@johnchristmas7522Күн бұрын
The way to explain the "Blitz" to Americans, is to stay it was 5months of 911's everyday. We lost a lot of pilots, aircraft could be replaced but pilots take time to train, thats why we are so grateful to our overseas commonwealth pilots. Australia,Canada, New Zealand, India, some volunteer Americans who came over before Pearl Harbour (2 years later) and of course the Polish.
