Love the video, thanks. Perils of camping in Spring rather than Summer in the north of England. Must say you have an optimistic take on Summer! I missed it this year because I was in the bathroom. 😆🙁

Hey, I really enjoyed your video, thank you for sharing. I'm training for doing this hike and was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing what kit you took? I've seen the tent you used really like that. Thank you.
@c2vranoutofnames2 ай бұрын
thank you, you have no idea how long ive been trawling youtube searching for a video where someone would just tell me their height, and show them lying down inside it so i had some idea of a reference. being 6 " 3 and a restless sleeper it's hard to find tents or reviews that actually even say anything besides "oh yeah loads of room" like thanks, i don't need your unspecified short butt telling me how roomy it is, i need specifics haha
@gonnyjibson2 ай бұрын
Hahah! I struggle with that as well, so many times the reviews don't answer any of the questions you actually want the answers too!

13:53 That hut was a lifesaver for me, I did my walk so long ago that chip and pin and contactless was fairly new and I hadn't passed any bank machines, so was running low on cash. Had about £3 left and was able to get plenty of snacks and a drink there. Lovely idea :)

7:35 I feel for you, I did the Anglesey Coastal Path and on day one was crossing a small footbridge over a stream when my foot slipped and I ended up in the stream and drowned an expensive camera. Dried it out for several days and it came back online, but the back LCD screen never worked again. Just used the viewfinder!
@gonnyjibson2 ай бұрын
Ahhh its such a sad moment when that happens! I was really lucky that it survived as it was underwater fully submerged for a goof 2 or 3 minutes and it isn't waterproof rated at all!

Did this (somehow) in 5 days from Wallsend to Bowness, lovely walk but I think I would have liked the extra day so I could spend more time at the museums on the way. Backpacked every night except one in Brampton when I stayed in a B&B because I was knackered and couldn't find the campsite haha

Can I ask what you guys did for filling up water and going to the bathroom along the way? I will be hiking in about a month and it would be great to hear from a fellow lady that did the hike. Such a great video, thank you for putting it together!
@gonnyjibson2 ай бұрын
Hello! Along the way there was the occasional campsite/cafe/pub/heritage site which usually had toilets and/or water facilities so it wasn't too much of an issue. Hope you have a great hike!

This is so cool 😎 If everything goes as planned I should be there on Monday, 22.07.24. I'm gonna have around 10 days only so I thinking about skipping Stages 1-6. How is the internet reception on the trail and/or in the huts? I might need to video call someone whole being on the route and I wonder if it's possible.
@gonnyjibson3 ай бұрын
Thanks! I think that's a great idea, especially if you love big mountains. The first 5 stages are generally more hills and forests rather than rocky peaks. The phone signal was pretty good overall, high in the mountains there was good signal and the mountain huts usually had good signal too. Have a great time!
@KK91KK91a3 ай бұрын
@@gonnyjibson Thanks a lot! Yeah, I love big mountains, I spent a lot of time on peaks of the Tatra mountains, I want to do a longer trail this time. I bought a lot of gear already, including via ferrata kit, I feel more than ready and I cannot wait to be there. Great videos you make, very informative!

@gonnyjibson6 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say we had much trouble, probably just that one encounter really where we were followed which I caught in the video but it didn't amount to anything. And I'm afraid I don't know where the rain coat was from, sorry!

Thanks for the great Video's (and the amazing Google Earth visualization)! Am now watching all of them. What part of the year were you hiking there? Did you use the Via Ferrata gears a lot or only on that Final climb...? Is it necessary or rather nice to have? Thanks
@gonnyjibson7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I am really glad your enjoying the videos 😀 I hiked from 11th July to the 11th August, this particular episode was filmed on 16th July. We used the gear a lot in the Kamnik Alps and the Julian Alps but outside that it wasnt needed at all. I would personally say the Via Ferrata gear was necessary in those areas, most people we saw on the trail also had the equipment but not everybody. I think it's important to remember that the equipment is not to prevent you falling, it is so that if you do fall you don't tumble hundreds of metres off the mountain so it's all a matter of personal risk tolerance. I definitely felt a lot more comfortable having it there with me, especially while having a large bag. Hope that helps!
@xavierdupret66187 ай бұрын
Thanks ! Appreciate the detailed response. One more question: did you book the hut accommodations ahead of your trip or was there always room when you arrived ? Thanks again
@gonnyjibson7 ай бұрын
@xavierdupret6618 I booked the first 2 weeks ahead but actually found for all of that period the huts were very empty, there was only 4 or 5 people in each one despite having capacity for probably up to 30 or 40. After this, I just booked 2 or 3 days ahead for peace of mind. In most cases you would be fine without a booking but I would recommend to book ahead for weekends as these are busier. You definitely need to book in the Triglav National Park as this is the most popular area, many of the huts were at full capacity when we stayed there. I would also research every hut you intend to stay in and get in contact with them before hand to check they're open, I found many were closed on certain days which wasn't particularly obvious. The alpine association of Slovenia does indicate what months and days that each is open but I would assume this is indicative rather than the full truth. I just made a spreadsheet and emailed all of them with my dates to check, they generally got back to me within 24 hours.
@gonnyjibson7 ай бұрын
@xavierdupret6618 Also, I know the floods of 2023 impacted a lot of the trails and many huts closed so this could be more of an issue in 2024 if your planning a trip. I am not sure on that but even more reason to check!

Hi Jonny, already looking forward to the next day! What navigation app/device did you use? And do you have a matching gpx for the SMT?
@gonnyjibson8 ай бұрын
Hey! Glad your enjoying them 😊 I have a Garmin Instinct watch which just gives a very low resolution direction and track when you add a GPX file to it, this works fine for me as the trails are generally well signposted with the red and white spot as well. Alongside that, I was also using the Slovenian Alpine Association's app called mapzs which has all the trails on, it is updated when trails are closed, and routes can be downloaded offline. This is also where I downloaded the GPX file. You can download the entire trail or each stage individually, which is what I did. Here is the link: mapzs.pzs.si/path/32778 I met others who were using maps.me but I tried this and preferred mapzs. Hope that helps!

Do you need reservations for these campgrounds? Or can you just walk up and pay? If the latter, generally what hours are available for payment (ie: what happens if you get to camp late for some reason)?
@gonnyjibson8 ай бұрын
I would recommend making reservations as some of the sites we stayed at had limited pitches, but I think in most cases, you could probably just walk up and pay. I think office hours will vary a lot for each site, we had really good signal for the majority of the route so you could always just call up if you're going to be late and see what they say. There aren't actually that many campsites so you will probably know where your going to be at the end of each day so booking ahead is fairly low risk, unless you drastically change your pace as we did on the last day!
