Serious question. Why don't planes crash today? All of the air crash investigation episodes are from the 60's to the 90's mainly. This is a very good thing. Is there one single factor that made crashes not really happen anymore? I am talking about in the U.S.
@MrChromed
@MrChromed 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of multiple factors. Better pilot training, better procedures, better flight politics, safer planes (engineering-wise), automated elements, improved airports, and so. But we can't forgot those people who died/perished to let the industry improve an be a safety place, because unfortunately we humans are reactive, not proactive. Their sacrifices or deaths can't be forgotten, EVER.

At the point when there was instability in the approach, a go around should have been initiated. It’s better safe than sorry when thing don’t look right.
@lassesuurmunne8340

They instantly tried to pull up as soon as they realized they were on the wrong approach but at that point it was already too late because they hit the truck which caused too much damage to the plane that rendered it uncontrollable. Everything went wrong that could. Visibility was extremely poor that day, the run way was a weird approach in general with instruments for the appropriate only on the left. So what they were supposed to do was approach the left as they did but they do sidestep maneuver to the right runway. But this was never clearly explained to the crew. There was a ton of stuff on that left runway and there were no lights to indicate that the left runway was not in use like normally. I can’t remember all the details anymore. I read a great book about the disaster by a surviving crew member who saw the the plane splitting after the impact and was just in a lucky seat, that somehow he survived the crash. And he explains a lot about this airport, they had landed there many times before this crash. And he felt that it wasn’t actually the crew’s or captain’s fault but it was easiest to blame the captain because he died and could not defend himself. The airport didn’t want to take responsibility but it was really more their fault. But I’ve forgotten a lot of what I learnt about this crash. But I was kinda obsessed at one point trying to learn. But they tried to instantly pull up for a go around but they hit that truck as soon they tried. They were already past the point of no return as soon as the captain realized he was on the wrong side. He was on the wrong side because only the wrong side had the instrumentation for landing and it was impossible to see the right runway with such poor visibility to land with the naked eye. They didn’t know they had to perform a side step maneuver over to the right from the left runway. So the communication, instructions and guidance wasn’t clear enough. And this airport even during good visibility was apparently a bit difficult because of the surrounding mountains. But yeah the go around was initiated right away but they hit a truck a split second after trying to.
