Well done, Tonia, hope to see you here soon. Far from being suppressed, the Maori language is actually being encouraged. "Te Reo Maori" is now being taught in Junior Schools and the kids come home and try to 'convert' us adults! "Te Reo" actually translates as "The language". (Have a hard time converting me, I'm nearly a local having emigrated from the UK 50years ago!) Many roadsigns are dual language and town names that did not have a Maori name are having one selected by the local community. Your comment in another post was about not celebrating Boxing Day in the UK - well, we do celebrate it here too, at least we get a day off. But of course we have nearly the same public holidays as the UK and also a lot more holidays than the US, mostly about 28 days off. Each State has it's own Anniversary (we're having one today, Wellington Anniversary Day, 20th January) If you go to the "Timeanddate" web page and request a calendar for New Zealand you'll be amazed. Best wishes - I'm hunting for more of your posts - Martin

In Australia bushfires can be started by natural causes, such as lightning strikes, or *by people (accidentally or on purpose).* Weather conditions and fuel conditions play a part in bushfires happening. When it comes to bushfires in LA it has bee reported as a conspiracy
@jars62302 күн бұрын
One of the issues with wildfires is, humans suppress fires, so forests go a longer period without getting burned, leading to more and more accumulated fuel. So when it does catch alight, you get much bigger, hotter faster spreading and more dangerous fires. More smaller fires are much better for nature than fewer bigger fires.
@ToniaElkins2 күн бұрын
@@jars6230 Right. And I understand that need for things like controlled burns etc. But when fires get out of hand it’s really devastating.

The black kites are very intelligent. They have adapted to human activity well, the scavenge from rubbish tips and hang around towns where they can get a free feed. Aboriginal people have used fire to hunt for millennia. Black kites have learned this skill and joined in the hunt. They are a very common species around the world, but i haven't heard of them setting fires anywhere else. No doubt they have learned other tricks from their surroundings. They are also one of the only birds of prey that congregate in large flocks. I have personally seen more that 1000 roosting together.

Bush/Wild fires are only going to become more common as we can't turn back the clock on global warming. Nature has evolved alongside fire for example some trees need fire to regenerate or female kangaroos are permanently pregnant so they can control population growth after a fire or flood. Learn from indigenous experience. Outside of fire season we have controlled burns to reduce the fuel load. Does this happen in the US? Don't populate areas that WILL have a fire... it's not a case of chance or IF a fire will happen it's WHEN. With the lengthening of fire seasons here in Australia and in the US we will no longer be able to share resources which we have always done. My heart goes out to all suffering the California fires.

Thinking of everyone, human and animal, that has been affected by the Californian fires. Loss of structures and belongs with memories are hard to replace. My husband's employer lost nearly their whole farm in 2023 about this time of year, too. Luckily, the homestead and the cattle were saved. The smell and cost to rebuild was no where near covered by insurance. My hubby (now 62) built $150000 to $200000 worth of fences in a year or so. It's pretty tough work. Our Indigenous peoples are the masters of understanding Australian nature and fires.

When they move their wings, they can fly like magic, I suppose, but not all birds can fly. Larger than a pigeon but smaller than a crow. The satin bowerbird is known for collecting anything blue and placing it in the bower. Clothes pegs, glass, plastic, straws, lego blocks, berries, bottle tops etc. The Regent Bowerbird is black and yellow and is smaller than the satin bowerbird. The bower is different to the nest. It's only used to attract a mate.
@stuwhiteman38103 күн бұрын
Good question Tonia is the bower the nest or do they build a separate nest to have young? They only ever tell us about the bower? The Australian Bower bird male is that black in colour that when light hits it in certain places you can see dark blue and I think they have a black, light blue and white banding in their eyes, beautiful bird and highly intelligent. A rich man can bye you a $1000 dollar gift, it doesn't mean he loves you. If another man works for 8hrs a day for little money and still provides for you,...then who is your man? I'm not sure what there thinking that's just my take on it,...lol, putting in the effort to say to those chicks, look at this sh_t ladies,...got the bower got the toys let's go and the chick says "yeah nah" seen better mate lol. No wonder they became so good at it. The younger male Bowerbirds said that's it the next Bower is going to be epic!!!

G'day! I really hope you get some long term relief for your neck pain...Soon! Unfortunately like many videos on Australian topics especially wildlife made by Americans they don't get all the facts correct... Most bowerbirds develop the colour recognition over time which is why the Satin bowerbird collects only blue items( The Western Bowerbird collects objects which are green silver or white)...We used to have a pair living near us in Sydney and I would often put out the odd bit of blue plastic or paper alongside the tray of food for the Lorikeets... The bower is strictly a courtship space and the female will the build a nest high in a tree and lay her usually 3 eggs alone... In the second video that stunning black and golden bird was a Regent bowerbird not a honeyeater... Cheers!
