I’m a little late to the party, but my Grant Kirkhope story is pretty special to me and I think this would be an appropriate place to share it! It was the autumn of 2015 and one of my best friends surprised me with two passes to a game developers’ conference in Ohio. We were in high school at the time-him an aspiring game dev, me an aspiring composer with a deep love for game music. Of course I was most excited for the Grank Kirkhope panel, and came loaded with a question for the Q&A. He had made mention in his Guest Grumps appearance that the tritone was a central motif in the Banjo soundtrack, intended to represent the dissonant personalities of the two lead characters. My question to him was, “How much of your writing process is informed by that kind of theory-based approach?” I was a prog nerd as well, dying to hear him extol the praises of an academic approach to the craft. His wacky, colorful soundtracks MUST have been fully loaded with that sort of intention, right? Instead, he basically said, “Nah, I just get behind a keyboard and make random noises until I hear the right thing, then ride it out on sheer vibes from there.” Heavily paraphrased, but that was the gist. And it intimidated the HELL out of me. Growing up playing classical, I knew theory from day one. When you’re playing music, theory is immensely helpful to the learning process. It’s much easier to practice a piece when you have a formal set of instructions. But writing isn’t the same as playing music. Good music isn’t derived from theory-based algorithms; not only does it allow for randomness, but it THRIVES on it. The most exciting music defies our expectations, so what good is an established process for making original music? Basically, I asked Grant if Real Composers™️ like him were frequently in the business of compositional cheat codes. His reply forced me to sit behind my instrument, git gud, fuck around and find out. Don’t constrain myself with uninspiring dogma. Break all the rules, and have more fun in the process. Guess which approach has served me better in the long run!
