When I went to the academy this incident was required reading. It served as the catalyst for law enforcement to switch from the 9mm to current .40 S&W JHP.

Love the huge old sedans they all drove back then. Some guys looked like they took over 6 or 8 shots, yet kept going. No body armor. What kind of weak ammo from an automatic can't kill a guy in 6 shots? A tragedy, but so very unbelievable in today's world of weaponry.

bs, platt was hit 11x, mostly thru his feet. One rd went ONE inch into his back presumbably having hit some object first. Matix hit NOBODY. It was all Platt, with ONE arm and a bullet thru one lung. The last 3 hits were execution shots as he sat in the cop car, unarmed, bled-out, helpless. The only lethal hit on him during the fight, was the first one, thru his arm and one lung. The same cop, same place, missed him 14 more times.. The head agent was blind without his glasses, missed 15x, He should never have been in the field, much less a stakeout, much less LEADING one. they missed the robbers SEVENTY times, not giving a flying eff where all of their wild shots went.

Really well acted overall. Ronny Cox excellent as always. Michael Gross and David Soul played great bad guys which is against their usual type. Its a real shame in a way that actors from this era are not better known than they are. Sadly they didnt have social media back then to promote themselves unlike a lot of the overhyped actors/actresses you get now who dont deserve the credit they get.

I was a friend of an Instructor at the FBI (at Quantico, Virginia), was one of the instructors that trained the new agents about the Miami Shootout. He provided me with an FBI film for a seminar that I was doing for our club on the subject of the Miami shootout. He did the speaking and the seminar....I ran the film! This what I remember about that time and this shootout. Thanks again John! You were a friend that pulled me thru that evening! We all miss you! R.I.P

I noticed how undergunned the cops were, good thing (I believe) was an officer who had the wherewithal to be hitting pretty accurately w/ old, but reliable .45 Auto-- most had .38 police issue-- 🚨 Another old, but VERY effective, i think one officer? police used 12 gauge pump, I haven't seen any videos on this awful and sad scene on KZbin till now 😮Kinda strange, imo

We watched this in the academy (1989) and then went over it in detail. So many mistakes were made. However what is rarely mentioned was the incredible bravery of the Hispanic agent who, despite being grievously wounded STAYED in the fight, drew his .357 after expending all his shotgun rounds, advanced on the vehicle and stopped Platt and Mattix from escaping.

As crazy as this may sound, I'll mention it anyways: Watch the retired FBI agent John DeSouza interview about these two guys making of offer to God Odin. Whether true or not, it appears they they had supernatural strength when they were being shot at, which is why they lasted so long, and only died of mortals wounds when finally shot on the neck hitting their arteries.

The FBI agents faced something not really seen before. and not prepared for. people will say "oh they were qualified for this and that and should have been carrying this instead". Hindsight. Different times. Read their history. William Russell Matix and Michael Lee Platt were the purps.. search 1986 FBI Miami shootout. for more info. This happened in 86. The aftermath was kind of the same as some police received 11 years later with the North Hollywood shootout. Different professions but if only every branch and police would be on the same page. still different today. sucks. History still not teaching us. RIP to those fallen.
