Cairns is a fairly big international destination. The population basically doubles in peak season with tourists. A favourite of the Japanese in the 80's and 90's. The signs in the city were in English and Japanese and they built so many resorts and hotels. Then the Japanese economy went south and it never hot back to the level of 4-5 747 jets every morning full of tourists back in the day.

After a 4 hr drive from Canberra to Sydney(2 1/2 hrs drive with 1 1/2 hr stuck on the M5) or a flight from Perth to Sydney a ferry ride is a must.

At 5:22 you can see water. My father came up on a train from Melbourne in '43; covered in coal soot from the train and decided to jump into the sea on arrival. The tide was out and there was only mud flats.

Here is Australia, Americans find it strange that we do a sort of line dance to the song Nutbush sung by Tina Turner. Here in Australia we think its strange that Americans send their children to school with a gun, so I guess it all balances out, right?

Mate, FNQ dont have the nicest beaches. You should check out south coast NSW, Tassie, Victoria, and Southwest WA. Bit cooler, but pristine white beaches.

So glad that you got to drive a car with the steering wheel on the right (correct) side of the car. President Clinton used to visit here, as he had a friend living in Palm Cove that he stayed with. Also Bill Gates used to stay at a friends house on the cliff at Yorkeys Knob.

You have discovered the worst beaches in Australia. The Great Barrier Reef means little or no surf and little or no sand. Australia has thousands of magnificent beaches. The Great Barrier Reef region has very few of them. Also in Southern Australia the superb sandy beaches don't have stinging 'jelly fish" or crocodiles! Hopefully you can go underwater to see the reef before Trump kills the coral for good! (The hinterland in the Cairns should be explored there rainforests, magnificent waterfalls and volcanic lakes.

hundreds of people are killed by visa license drivers. 5 tourists were killed in my local area in 1 accident - Nigerians driving on the wrong side. International drivers licenses should never be issued without at least some tuition somewhere. Be aware of how difficult it is to switch sides.

Probably a good idea to wear a hat, sunglasses, shirt and sunscreen. During the Australian Summer not only is the southern hemisphere tilted towards the sun, but the Earth is also at its perihelion (closest point to the sun). The rate of skin cancer is much higher than in the northern hemisphere, and any more than 30 minutes in the sun without protection will likely cause sunburn.

Not to mention a dose of heat exhaustion or worse. Its amazing how many people doing videos we have to tell this to. The flights in should have warnings or something just prior to landing.

Don't be ridiculous. If nobody visits, why is there an international airport there? They get tons of tourists every year. A lot of beaches north of Townsville are muddy, like Cairns. You can see the mud in the water. Whitehaven beach, in the Whitsundays off Proserpine, is one of the world's most intensely beautiful beaches. Pure white sand. And to die for.

Be careful of being out in the sun in Australia because we have the highest levels of UV rays in the world. Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and perhaps sunblock should be worn in summer. In January it can take only 10 minutes to get sun burnt on your skin. In Australian schools there is a policy of " no hat, no play" in outdoors.
