Beautiful grass - side oats game. Can you plant or move grasses in the Fall? I'm in Zone 5, near St. Charles, Illinois.

I'm most likely to try albicans crinita pennsylvania sprengelii and radiata. I would love a video on summer, fall, winter color, any that change to darker color and hold on to darker seed heads longer. I maintain the common garden for my apt complex and want people to appreciate the sedges instead of wanting it cut back too early. Thank you!!!

I like this video but it doesn't discuss the plants mentioned in the description.

I'm always unsure what my results would be compared to Mt.Cuba. I've planted C.pensylvanica under my oak tree here in 8b, the Piedmont region of SC. It's doing well for it's first summer here in SC, getting a ton of sun and doing okay. I started with 3" pots and they've grown about 3" beyond that in some cases. The heat really flattens them. The shade of the oak is intermittent due to the angles and elevation, so they do get the harsh afternoon sun. I give them a good soaking once a week. Should have planted more of them, honestly. I hope they'll soon carpet the entire area under the oak. That Palm Sedge catches my eye. I could see trying one as a specimen plant. The one sedge in the MtCuba trial that really stood out to me as a specimen plant, and maybe even a short hedge, was Carex haydenii. The one they showed in a video was very upright and columnar. Exceptional form, imo, and also something not talked about anywhere. I think it'll be very floppy in the shade and likely doesn't look very nice with the open center and splayed leaves. That said, if you could get it to be upright like in the MtCuba video, that'd be really something nice!

Thanks for the video and information. As a homeowner, I’m really interested in native sedges. I’ve been doing my own trials with Carex pensylvanica, cherokeensis, albicans, radiata, and flaccosperma. I’ve just ordered 500 plugs to add this spring of more of what I already have. I’m mostly looking for green mulch to replace using wood mulch.

Where did you learn that it is one of the species that Pinnated Grouse are attracted to? I'm compiling research on prairie plants that they have an affinity for and have not been able to find much so I'd very much like to learn your source! :)

I like to use carex to transplant into my rock/biomass compost mounds and to cover the ground in marginal areas. I'm going to experiment with using them in my agroecological garden. Im also growing cyperus and looking to use them when i take my garden semiaquatic. Im using the the carex-wild rye-forb mounds as berms when im done i will put a groundwater dam before them and they will turn into chinampa intakes. On the wet side of the dam there is prarie cordgrass(I hope it takes care of the Bermuda that survived my assault, the whole garden used to be pure Bermuda rhizome)and on the mound side there is rivercane. I will have to strike a careful balance to keep those from taking over everything in the future. Im looking to use carex and crushed rock to hold the microtopography together. And strategically manage the boss rhizomatous grasses i planted in my garden.
