I picked up one of these jobmasters at an estate sale because it looked like a great tool but had no idea how it worked! You demonstrated how it worked in a simple but effective way. Thank you! It cane with old rounds and pins but I don’t know if that powder will work anymore but I’m going to restore it anyway and maybe I’ll be able to find or make new pins and cartridges for it.

No. Does it make me smile that it technically could be? Oh, you bet! And now it opens and closes easily, and the ejector functions properly.

I'm also concerned for safety, it seems this "Nitrocellulose Integrated Powder Actuated Nails" are more closely related to a caseless amunition or even a Dreyse needle gun cartridge since the nail is part of the load.
@vintagepowderactuatedtools90362 ай бұрын
There was an attempt to market "nitrocellulose integrated pins" once before. It was for the Ladd tool. The special pin had a cup on the end that held the pellet. We had some on hand when Masterset was moved from the Indianapolis location, and someone unfamiliar with them threw them in the hopper. A few minutes later they started popping off, apparently from a pin scraping a tablet. After watering down the hopper, a couple of us fished the pins out. A week later they were dry enough for me to ignite them with my lighter. I really do wish I saved a few of them, but there was too much risk in keeping them.

@vintagepowderactuatedtools90364 ай бұрын
It is rare but maybe not as rare as I first thought. They didn't pop up online until rather recently. Then suddenly in recent years, several had been available in online auctions. My guess is that people held on to them because they are so unique. Those people are now passing away and they are thus being put up for sale. I have three now, two of which came from a person that recently closed up shop and was selling off those old unique tools he held on to.

@vintagepowderactuatedtools9036 yeah ok that makes sense... it's also an item that's on the cusp of being classed as an illegal fire arm (in Australia anyway) so it could also be abit of 'if u don't ask then people won't tell'. I purchased mine off Facebook marketplace for 200 dollar afew years ago of a local picker. I saw it 18 minutes after he posted it and organised pick-up immediately, he said 5 minutes later facebook had taken it down and given him a ban for selling illegal weapons on their platform!

My one is a slightly different design to the one you showed on your channel, the collar still has a locking lever but it isn't flared out like the ones you have, also I was goin to say, the collar on mine was alittle tricky to remove and put back on at first. There's a funny little flat head pin you can rotate inside the collar. Sort of moves in 2 actions. The head of that pin is off set ever so slightly and will lock the collar in place when rotated again. Removing that allows you to take the safety lever out etc. Trigger system and firing pin is such a simple idea but perfectly manufactured to be foolproof! They are an unbelievably easy thing to modify into a proper fire arm without actually modifying a single thing, just adding a thing or 2 you can get anywhere. Kinda scary actually haha. makes me wonder if that's where alot of them ended up!

I acquired an old Ramset tool at an estate sale a couple weeks ago and am having a hard time identifying what model it is. I've been through all of your videos and Google searches and can't find a match. It came in a metal hip roof tombstone toolbox with Ramset logo. The tool has a plastic/rubber handle with Ramset logo, but the tool itself has no model number or serial number that I can find. The small housing that holds the .22 load is cracked so I'm not sure that I want to try to use it. It has an adjustable square metal base. I have a bunch of pictures that I could share if you'd be willing to help me identify what model it is.

I'm' glad it was helpful. You need to be cautious with the tool. It works differently than the captive piston design and can be dangerous if used improperly. You can use anything from WD-40 to gun oil. Basically, use whatever you have on hand. Just make sure to wipe off the excess.

It is a shame they never offered optional barrels for them. The maximum fastener size they can take is 3". Using them to join two 2x4s together to make a 4x4 requires a number 4 cartridge and a 3" fastener with washer. However the barrels are too short and narrow to launch 40D - 60D fasteners for joining multiple 4x4s together. It would be lovely if someone made a 6" barrel capable of handling a timber nail with a 17/32" head diameter
@vintagepowderactuatedtools9036 Жыл бұрын
You can make a tool that drives a four inch pin, and it has been done, but there is a sticking point. Powder actuated tools are divided into two groups: high velocity and low velocity tools. High velocity tools can do it, but they are no longer approved for use on the job. If I remember the numbers correctly, any tool, with or without a piston, that can propel a fastener at 1,000 fps is considered high velocity. It takes a lot of energy to drive a four inch fastener. Low velocity tools pretty much reach their limit with three inch pins.
@kenibnanak5554 Жыл бұрын
@@vintagepowderactuatedtools9036 From testing I know a #4 .22 blank will drive a washer equipped 3" nail perfectly into two 2x4s being joined to make a 4x4. I want a nail gun that can reliably (and quickly) sink a tacking nail into two 4x4s to hold them together. I have some #5 shells, and even some 50D nails the heads of which I turned down to .30 so they would fit into the Remington's barrel, but of course the limiting factor is the Remington.s barrel is only 3" long. A longer barrel is needed and I think it frustrating that no one makes one. Mptomg the OD of the Remington barrel at the muzzle is .62 an obvious solution is to thread the muzzle for 1.2x28 TPI, then at the chamber end tap a cut down, shot out Mauser 8mm barrel to that thread pitch and attach that as a means of making a 6" barrel equivalent. I can't be the first to want a quick and easy way to fasten 4x4s without needing expensive hangers.

It isn't that easy. If you lengthen the nosepiece, you will also have to lengthen the piston enough to reach the work surface. It's easy to drive a three-inch pin into green concrete, older concrete is a different story. Not that it makes much difference but most three-inch pins on the market are not three inches, most of them are actually 2 7/8. One way to sink a three-inch pin is to make it a tad bit shorter. That's why Simpson marketed a PDPA-300 and a PDPA-278 so you can take your pick. Speaking of Simpson, see if they might still have a PT-27HDA in stock. That tool was one of the most powerful low velocity tool on the market. You could also look into getting A Hilti tool intended for Insulation washers. They have the extended nosepiece and Piston you are asking for.@@kenibnanak5554
