These locomotives used rheostats resistors for power control and the traction motors could be connected in series,parellel and series parallel combinations.There were 17 power notches available,5 for shunt notch and 5 for dynamic braking.This is still less inefficient compared to tap changers as a significant amount of energy is lost in the form of heat.These system was prevalent in europe during the early 1900s to 1970s and 1980s till thyristor choppers took over but with dc traction motors and finally 3 phase ac motors made it even easier to design dc locomotives wihich could use regenerative braking ensuring energy efficient operation.But frankly these locomotives are wonderfully incredible.
