Is there a way to keep the PL off if not wanting to use it and just use the VND? I’ll mostly use for photo but slowly getting into video more. Trying to make a decision between a VND vs the PL + VND is super hard rn!
@RoyceMyerLee9 күн бұрын
Yup! You can turn off the PL and use the VND. Just letting you know the PL doesn’t “lock” into place like the VND does. So you can technically turn the PL feature on by accident. Personally speaking, since you’re mainly photo use, I’d say the PL + VND is a solid choice and the one to pick. I think you’ll get more use out of its quality than someone like me who mainly wanted to use it for video.

Do you use a lens hood or does lens flaring not happen often? I also wonder if i should just get glimmerglass 1 because the fact that you have to turn it only makes it compatible with one lens hood which increases the size of the camera quite a bit...
@RoyceMyerLee22 күн бұрын
@@davevayn I personally do not use a lens hood. But I can answer at least that I personally have not noticed much lens flare either (and I using it in my recent travel in CA a few months ago when it was basically sunny all the time lol).
@davevayn22 күн бұрын
@@RoyceMyerLee interesting cause I had photos where it ruined it and was hard to remove in post as it also adds a light layer which can look off but then sometimes it can make it look better… I do shoot at odd angles from below etc so maybe it’s that and also shooting a bit into the sun I guess…
@RoyceMyerLee22 күн бұрын
@@davevayn hmm I don’t think I’ve had many significant issues but I do have a few photos that kinda have a light layer on it like you’re describing. But I would say for me I don’t shoot at odd angles like that on the norm so maybe that could answer the lens flares issue. I can try it out again and see if I can get similar results!

If you got this chroma maglock version, then unfortunately, you can’t screw anything additional on. You would need to stay within the maglock system to stack.
@JJ.StayFit2 ай бұрын
so this wouldnt work well for video? A7Siii?
@RoyceMyerLee2 ай бұрын
Well I wouldn’t say that, it definitely does work well for video! I have the A7SIII, and the quality that comes out is superb! But if you’re in a run and gun situation like your lighting changes all the time (i.e. the sun comes out and then it’s gets cloudy and then it’s sunny again), then using the filter in my opinion gets rather difficult to use cuz you have to adjust the VND functionality many times. If you’re in a controlled environment (i.e. consistent and constant lighting) or you know it’s constantly going to be one condition all the time (i.e. always cloudy or full sunshine), I would say that the filter is pretty solid and very ideal for those situations. All in all, adjusting the VND part of the filter is a pain in my opinion lol
@JJ.StayFit2 ай бұрын
@@RoyceMyerLee this is my first time buying one of these and I’m still new to my camera, however I also read these need some type of magnet? I have a 1.4 F 35mm GM I would like to use this on for video mostly and some pictures at times as the sun gets overwhelming at times on the ISO. What would you recommend and thank you for replying
@RoyceMyerLee2 ай бұрын
@@JJ.StayFit yeah, you would need the adapter plates to use the magnetic functionality on your lenses. Which you’d also have to dish out more money for..the magnetic plates in the long run is pretty convenient if you plan on getting more lenses. But that depends on your and your wallet lol Personally, I would honestly recommend in getting the regular VND from PolarPro (or honestly any company like K&F from Amazon). Thats where I started and I used it for everything. I just got the new system since I have multiple lenses now and changing it out from one to another slows my workflow. But getting the threaded one from PolarPro to put your lens is so much cheaper and honestly you could probably get it even more cheaper used. All in all, a VND would 100% solve your problem when the sun gets very overwhelming. In my opinion, a VND with a 2-5 stop is more practical from your explanation. Hope that helps!
@JJ.StayFit2 ай бұрын
@@RoyceMyerLee thank you so much for the info, and I apologize if I’m over asking so many questions. At this time, money isn’t so much of an issue, just trying to buy the appropriate things as I’m in south Florida it’s sunny here and 1.4fe is a pain in the sun, however I would like to purchase this new set just, wanted to know what is all I need to purchase to have it right, as I’m seeing on their website they have these threaded vs not, and not a lot of people are talking about this subject
@RoyceMyerLee2 ай бұрын
@@JJ.StayFit well if money isn’t a problem, it’s only preference and flexibility at this point of whether you want threaded or the maglock system. At the end of the day, if you’re constantly outside like I am, personally, I don’t recommend this filter. And since money ain’t an issue, I would just get the regular VND in the maglock version so later you can use it for other lenses for the future if you buy additional base plates. Not sure how piercing the sun may be in Florida on the day to day, but if it’s always sunny, maybe the 6-9 stop would be smart to try as well.

I've tried it for a while and i dont like it takes 1 - 1.5 stop down. I just recently realized this. I am not happy with the effect. But realized it happens with all the mist effect filters and CPL filters. More you stack, more you lose. So I just use 1 mist filter (Glimmerglass1) to minimize ND effect. It shouldnt matter too much if you shoot outside most of the time. Thanks for the video!

good review man. i bought these about a week ago, i only shoot video, and used these on a shoot last weekend - and you are spot on with this review. The image quality is really good, and the cpl is actually super handy, butttttt that fin-dangling with the design is a pain. This is just the kind of review I was looking for, real world use in run and gun situations. I currently have the NiSi swift kit which is fine, but I was looking at this because of the combined filters. I was going to keep it on another lens so it's less filter swapping, rather than a total VND system replacement. But since I do mostly run and gun, based on your advice I'm going to hold off on this product. Perhaps wait for a second edition. Thanks for this video! Oh one other thing I want to mention, on my NiSi I can dial the ND to 1 which is useful because I use that for when I take photos, so I don't have to remove the filter when I switch between photo and video. They seem to be the only VND that does this. It's what keeps me from switching to any other filter system.

How does this look shooting car interior displays? I generally get such awful rainbow effects whenever a PL is on my camera shooting interiors, I noticed rainbow effect in the headlights, how about digital screens?
@RoyceMyerLee3 ай бұрын
So I just tested the filter on my car interior display just now. Fortunately, I don’t get that rainbow effect on my car interior display. Unfortunately though, my interior display is on the older side (10 years old) which isn’t like the touch screens available in newer model cars which have much brighter and cleaner screens. So I’m not sure how it holds up with those types of displays in newer model cars. However, I also just tested it on my computer desktop monitors (gaming monitor and a color accurate monitor) and it displays pretty well without any rainbow effect! But to test it a bit further, I tested the filter on a MacBook Air Retina display with a white background, and even though it doesn’t display that rainbow effect, it’s goes from this blue color to an orange shade. Not sure why that happens to be honest but I thought this might additional test might semi-emulate what the newer model cars have.. Hope all my additional tests help answer your question!

Looks like an awesome filter, thumbs up for the review! The flaw you mentioned is the only thing that puts me off from the 2 in 1 VND/CPL and why i decided to go with nisi swift as it can be easily stacked and removed, i assume for video centric users, a CPL would be more a specific shot as opposed to wanting the CPL on all the time then having to adjust both.
