I used to work in a laboratory at Safety Kleen, many years ago. Back then, a lot of used motor oil was commercially recycled to fuel cement kilns; the amount of heat required for firing cement is extreme. So environmentally, having it soak into wood is in some ways better with regard to air pollution. The only issue is that the used engine oil picks up metallic contamination from the engine, such as nickel, chromium, amd cadmium. I used to work as an environmental engineer and learned about those. You don't want those metals running off into streams or crop soil, but trace amounts shouldn't hurt. Most of it stays in the wood I reckon. I'm using used motor oil on some wooden steps around my house.

It all comes from crud oil which comes from underground anyway so if you got it use it plus if you read the label on a lot of those store bought stains they're not environmentally friendly either so does it matter it doesn't use it I do and it works pretty good and has for worked for me and my dad for years

You can buy radial rims for the Dayton hubs your truck is running. The 10.20 bias ply tires is equivalent to 11r22.5 tires. So look for radial rims for Dayton hubs and that’ll help out your wheels and tires issue to modernize and safer aspect

Used to soak the buried part of 8' peeler posts (treated with copper napthanate) in thinned used motor oil in a drum for a week. Before bedding them in concrete I stapled a plastic sheeting cover over the oiled part. The fence is still standing under tension 35 years later.

Actually many engine oils nowdays not burning like old day ones.. Ignition point sometimes are higher than 250°C. Easy to test that when adding used motor oil to some fireplace so to speak to start burning and to burn better.. but that oil don't want to burn at all.. disel, motorcycle etc oils not so easy to ignite.. So - the same here - investigate options to use this oil for wood and wood deck maintenance to enlarge their lifetime and preserve wood from climate impact..

I'm running a test on this vs boiled linseed oil right now. I have 3 pieces of old PT 2x10 with 1, 2, and 3 coats of 50/50 used motor oil & mineral spirits (didn't have diesel). Then I did 3 pieces with the first having 4 coats of pure BLO, the second having 3 coats of 50/50 BLO & mineral spirits, and the third having 2 coats of 50/50 and 2 coats of pure BLO. I found that while the motor oil pieces penetrated deep into the wood, there was a noticeable oily finish on the surface after only 2 coats. And 3 coats was quite oily. This might be ok for a fence or something, but I'm putting it on my utility trailer that I use to haul sheet goods, lumber, and expensive hardwoods. So this was a no go for me, obviously. The BLO test pieces by contrast are hard to the touch, which is to be expected with a hardening oil like BLO. I think the combo of 50/50 coats on the first 1-2 coats then pure BLO thereafter is the way to go for sure.

The environmental question is a big one I'm trying to answer. There's so much that goes into it. This is a form of recycling that appears to be far more efficient and less impactful than other forms of recycling. In addition, it is localized; meaning that additional waste from logistical movement is not spent. Oil does degrade faster than synthetic plastics which is confusing because they're made out of the same stuff as far as I understand. It is also cheap or even free resulting in less work for said resource unless economic impact on the environment from this reduced work. Improves the lifespan when compared to bare wood resulting in less wood waste and longer structural integrity. In contrast though, dangerous heavy metals, variance amongst oils, questionable biodegradability, risk of contaminating groundwater, unclear evidence of dispersed use being environmentally safe, and unclear lifespan for this use case before safe degradation can occur. Does it have negative health impacts to humans occupying and interacting with these oil finished structures? Also, there's a number of other factors that play into this. Are new paints and finishes environmentally safer? It's a good question because we don't know as average consumers what's in these paints. Are they any more biodegradable? Do they contain microplastics? How much economic work is required to produce these paints and what is the environmental cost? How much longer does wood last with off-the-shelf paint in comparison to used oil finishes? How reusable is the wood if the structure is dismantled? If oil is unethical to use as a wood finish in terms of its environmental impact, how is this use case any more unethical than the staggering amount of oil spilled every year from vehicles during their use case? If anyone has an opinion or more info on this please let me know the internet is not giving very clear answers.
@thedillestpickle
@thedillestpickle 25 күн бұрын
Yea answer is clear. It won't hurt the environment and there is no on the world. Do you worry that someone 100 miles away from you has been putting oil on their fence posts? No, it's totally harmless. The only environment impact is that a wasp might not be able to use that wood to build a paper nest. And a grub might not be able to eat into the wood. And a moss might fail at growing on the wood. It's an extremely local application of a distillate from crude oil from the ground.

Am not a fan of that greyish, dirty colour the used oil produces. (Depends of course just how dirty the oil is). Clean oil mixed 50/50 with diesel produced the natural warm colour i wanted
