A successful life is measured by others. A satisfied life is measured by you. I think that's the best way to look at it. 👌🏻

I measure my success on the ratio of new jobs and advertising. This year I have new customers and zero advertising.

Hi Sam great video as normal when I started with my dad 25 years ago he said to me you will never make a living out of gardening and he was right in some aspects of it but in the end the passion for your business overcomes the desire to earn loads of money I've got a very understanding wife who pays most of the household bills and I just help out when I can afford to as just looking after the business so very difficult to make money out of it but sometimes just love doing the job keep up the good work and keep plodding on with what you like doing

I spoke to my accountant yesterday and he didnt mention everything going digital? also, i use a week to view a4 diary, it works for me, each to their own! Any payments outstanding, i always have a page in the front of my diary that i fill in daily. Nothing gets erased until the payment is in the bank!

A long standing, lovely and kind customer moved house and asked me to cut the grass. There was no access to the rear garden which was only about 25m sq. I went out my way to cut it but it was a nightmare taking the mower through the house so i bought a cheap secondhand mower and left it in the rear garden. Everyones happy and now i cut the neighbours who's garden is a medium size. The only thing i take through is a strimmer and bag for the grass and a few weeds. The mower is mine so if she sacks me I'll walk away with the mower. But she never will!

I had a fancy house to go through to cut the grass. I got him to sign a disclaimer first, that if anything was damaged or marked it was up to him. I have on at the moment used to take the petrol one through now the stihl RMA443v tiled floor. They are a pain.

I’ve found after I’ve lifted the mower up stairs and it’s tilted a bit, it won’t start for a few pills and has black smoke. Great mower though and just ordered an additional one

Have you ever noticed how many of these clients fall into same gender and age group. Get enough of them on your books and their control freakery will leave you hating your business. I wont put up with the can you cut it lower customers anymore. In fact if I do a quote and it's already being scalped by them or previous operator I just tell them I won't be mowing it that low.

Three strikes and out for me. I give them the benefit of the doubt for the first 2, then if something happens again it’s game over! At the end of the day we all have our own ways of working but when a customer starts to alter how you work after you’ve set out your terms at the start of working for them it smells of trouble!

I think if your looking at expanding and taking on workers, a side business is a good idea, if not, just treat it as a top up for your business

I think if you are looking to expand and take someone on, then a side business is a good idea, if your staying on the go it alone ride, then its good to have a side hustle, just to top up work iof needed, for a bit extra.

Vans and tools are always needing something spending on them! Sometimes customers don’t always realise the expense of being a sole trader! In my 21 years of being a maintenance gardener, I still get tricked by some customers! Enjoy the videos, and agree with a lot of your views.

Hi Sam hope your well. Dunno how I missed this vid but watched ot there. 100% agree trust and respect is so simple . Yet even more simple to lose. Neighbour in street...I was just starting out....young couple...they were going on holiday and asked me to quote...silly me done a lower price ...would've been 70 but done quoted 50...was like the amazon jungle.....so they agreed and off they set on their hols (2 weeks)...so after they left I got started.....dude this should've been over 500 quid but hey ho I was just starting....so anyways gets strimming away with a brush cutter...not even 5 mins into it...hit bricks under the mess blade tore...so attempts with saw attachment...blunt after 20 mins...so messages to say.. can't continue until I get parts delivered ie new blade attachment...took pics of brushcutter blade and sent etc...wasnt bothered only a couple of pound to replace and be there next day.l and continue (or so I thought) Gets a message that night from the guy....don't ever step in my garden again....as I knew him I thought he was kidding.....nope...it was quite threating the message after So 2 weeks goes past and the night before their return ...I got a message from his missus asking if the garden had been done What else could I do but send her the messages. He came over to apologise and asked if I could finish garden 🤣🤣🤣 let's just say they've had to fork out quite a bit as council had to do it......just can't go arseholes...but he ruined it fir his missus and his kids.

I get it if you're starting off....have no work etc but.... instantly I think it would set you off as someone desperate for work and people would think they were doing you a favour given you work and wouldn't want to pay your worth. I'd rather spend the time walking and knocking in areas I wanted to work and promoting myself. Great topic tho mate and does make sense 👍

When I first started I used to give a free cut every 16 cut, I also gave a free cut if they got me a new permanent customer. It worked well when I first started. I packed it in when my books got full, and I still have some of the original customers. They don't get free cuts now but they didn't mind when I dropped it off. Get your foot in the door and do a good job and your away.

we have always priced accordingly, sometimes we price a job in a way where we price high if its awkward, spoke about this on my vlog channel live today, we have a job where there is a very tight entrance, so tight we have to load a mower specific for that job, plus kids swing and climbing frame, small lawn, very awkward job, we added £10 because of how awkward it was, BUT!!!!! and I must stress this, we told the customer we will have to charge extra purely because of how awkward it was, and we and the customer are happy with that, I wont price a job high, that I really don't want, when we price any job, we give a breakdown quote and make sure they understand what they are paying for. Always price any job that your going to do accordingly.
