I went to AIT there for 36c telephone operator and lineman. I couldn’t believe what I got myself into when we had switchboard training. They were the really old switchboards that you put pug in and out and ring the phone I was going to Germany so I got extra training on computer switchboards. When I got to Germany one other person I went to AIT with was in the Battalion. I was put in charge of setting up the switchboards for every platoon in 3 companies because they didn’t know how to set up the computer.

As a former soldier station at Ft. Gordon I would strongly advise against using white for surfaces in any building on this particular base unless you want to spend a good portion of your budget on cleaning staff or for it to be repainted.

I was born at Fort Gordon. My father was stationed there. My family resided in a small town in the outkirts of Augusta called Harlem, bithplace of Oliver Hardy. I have learned from my oldest brother that they have decided to rename it Fort Eisenhower. There goes my birthplace and history.

Wow, I took classes for 10 month at that signal tower during 1970-1971. I believe we were the first ones to move in to the brand new red brick quarters/barracks. "Rainy Night in Georgia" was a big hit in 1970 but during my 10 month stay, it never rained but just had a snow flurry one morning. Also, "Feliz Navida" by Jose Feliciano was a big hit and was blasting out of the boom box day and night. I swear I heard that song few thousand times and I even recorded both "Rainy Night in Georgia" and Feliz Navida" in one of my albums. Great memories...

Thank you for taking the time to video this and sharing it too. Such an important part of GA history. Coincidentally, my wife and I just returned home from a trip to Savannah today. Stayed on the river and enjoyed the cargo traffic and work of the tug boats. Oh, and great job by the fire department and tugboats for putting that fire out on the river at the wood chip site yesterday.

Fort Gordon has changed dramatically. I went there for basic training and AIT in 1977 through 1978. I retired from there in 1999. Signal Towers is going away. I had signal tower duty there a couple of times. It has become a totally different kind of military base. It has always been a multi service base. This transformation really makes it a DOD Agency for all of the services and US Government Agencies.

I attended AIT at Fort Gordon in the 1980's. I will always value my time and training there. The Signal Towers remain iconic in my mindset, but progress is inevitable. All of my best in your endeavors.❤🇺🇸❤

all well and good, but HOW does one operate the gates, aka open them!!, as in London and Australia, boaters do this themselves!!- they don't rely on a trained man in a shed to do it for them.

Back in 1994 when we did the first big deepening in Savannah, we had the two Norfolk dredges “ Pullen” and “Essex” digging from Sta 0+000 to 70+000 , the TL James dredge “Bill James” digging from STA 70+000 to 103+000, the M Operating Co dredge “Stuart” subbing under Norfolk and the Southern Dredging Co dredge “Cherokee” working in the Back River . Not to mention the hopper dredges “RN Weeks” and Ouachita working off Tybee .
