Anyone who's spent time trying to teach children how to read knows this is simply not true. I don't even need to understand neurology to know that I want my students to know how to read and spell "tail" no matter the context. Guessing is not reading and it's ESPECIALLY harmful for multilingual learners. My students were incredulous when I'd ask them "does it make sense?" They'd rightly look at me like, "Lady, I don't know, this is a new language for me!"

Who is advocating for guessing? The word "tail" can have a completely different meaning in different contexts. And depending on the ages and backgrounds of your students, if you teach some of those context-dependent definitions in the classroom, you're likely to get in big trouble. If you don't know the meaning of the words (and whether or not they make some kind of sense) in the context in front of you, have you really read anything? Thank you for this presentation! One of my worries about too much focus on fonix [sic] in English, even for native speakers, was made clear in about the 40- to 45-minute mark. My other worry about too much focus on fonix [sic again] is for students new to English, who are learning to read in English before they have fully acquired the sound system that connects (only somewhat) to our writing system! Give English learners a chance to acquire English oral language (native speaker kindergartners get 4 or 5 years) proficiency before you accuse them of being failures!

I heard Dr. Dehaene's presentation at TRL Summit in San Diego recently. I had several concerns about his claims. It is very in line with scientific thinking to be skeptical and ask for evidence and sources, along with specific explanations of his rationale. If you listen to Dr. Strauss at the 1-hour mark, you may hear reasons to consider what he means by the limitations of fMRI testing.

Did you listen at the end (1 minute and 15 seconds) when they discuss eye movement studies (even with readers of Braille) and pseudo words? Does Dr. Dehaene think those areas of research are "utterly false?"

With so much diversity in our communities, it’s amazing how we can incorporate different heritages and embracing the diversity. I think acknowledging a students cultural background and being able to learn more about each other can help promote that inclusivity. There’s so much creativity that can be promoted with art and different mediums to help students explore and learn. Thank you for sharing!

Love seeing the focus on preserving and showcasing a student's first language through celebrations of culture and heritage and the highlighting of Dual Immersion schools.

That's so bad that it's not even Spanglish. It's her own Director Pigeon Speak. This woman is one of the many "Directors" AKA professional enablers who does nothing at Central Office beside accept a big salary to keep the status quo of a bully culture going. She enabled Karling and bullied lots of people. Just cause she does it with a smile and pleasant voice doesn't mean her bullying isn't brutal. Let's get these Directors off our books and put the money back in the classrooms.

Patriotism and humanity is so low these days and also empathy, and sometimes I question a lot of things and I don’t even know where to find American patriotism anymore. But there is a place I can always count on and I know where to find these things, Sesame Street, because it’s honest just like our founding fathers end it teaches us how we should be and how we should act. No matter what you have to say, Sesame Street always listens to you, if Sesame Street can do all these things, then why can’t we? It’s not hard, just do it.

Such an incredible display of students sharing their culture and traditions with the wider student collective! When we create spaces for students to share and embrace theirs and others' culture, language and traditions we validate the importance and celebration of diversity. Integrating cultural responsiveness across content areas encourages connection to personal experiences which also increases students' ability to comprehend and understand ideas being taught.

I love seeing parent participation in the classroom! Singing "great white shark, great white shark lurking in the water..." in Spanish greatly shows how we CAN learn something in Spanish and then make a connection to it in English!

As I move forward in my career teaching English Learners, it is great to have resources like this and support of my own so that I can provide the best learning opportunities for each and every student. I am excited to introduce some of the strategies and curriculum that has been introduced here for migrant and newcomer families.

I thought the hand gestures and the phrases the students used to demonstrate the bridge between their first and second language were extremely insightful! It was a perfect way for students to visually understand how their two languages are at their disposal and together they create a bridge for students to interchange as needed.
