Hi from Australia, I've just joined the crew. Ive only been doing this for just over a month. Luckily im off work due to ankle surgery, so I've been forced to rest and what better way to spend time. Im now obsessed. I love how you explain everything so it makes sense, as there is so much to learn. I've made some major breakthroughs, and I found the maiden name of my G grandmother which no one in my known family knew ..and more. 🫶

SS5 (copy of application for SS): I want to point out that you need to take the information regarding parents names with a grain of salt. These can be just as faulty as any other record. EG my maternal grandfather and his 2 siblings (totaling 3 people) provided 3 different names for their shared father! While they can be correct, just as often they are not. I have come across quite a few that were in error.

I was able to prove that Margaret Wilson Poff was the mother of Wilson Poff using a deed I found on FamilySearch. Wilson Poff married a woman who was also named Margaret, so when his mother sold him some land, the deed specifically mentioned the women as Margaret Poff, mother of Wilson Poff and Margaret Poff, wife of Wilson Poff every time the women were mentioned.

Hi Aimee, Oh My goodness I am pulling my hair out here. I am from UK. My husband's mother Doris was fostered from Cork in Ireland in 1922 age 4. THAT is the only official evidence we have that she was ever born. She always wanted to know before she died her parents names and if she had family. Sadly she passed away at 97 years old never finding out in spite of my over 20 years looking! She did not even know when her birthday was. My husband did his DNA in the hope that we find out (I promised her I would keep looking). I wish I could afford to pay someone to search for us but we are both old bodies/pensioners. Are there any hints or any help you could point us to please? I really would love to sort this now for my husband.
@AncestryAimee

The key is to sort your matches and then work on one group and try to figure out how they’re related to one another. Once you have a tree with those matches connected, you can put that into a program like what are the odds on DNA Painter. Good luck!

What about invitee account requirements- guest, contributor, or editor? Is an Ancestry account required, and what kind, paid or free, and for each role? I aim to create an online family file and invite family members to view it, but some may want to contribute. Thank you for explaining how to do this.
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee Күн бұрын
An ancestry account isn’t required, unless they want to look at record images. That requires an ancestry account. However, ancestry allows a family plan, which doesn’t have to actually be family. So you can share the cost of Ancestry with others if you would like.

Does anyone know how to find *some* record, any record of a woman who died in Tennessee in 1836 or '37? The state didn't have death certificates that early. I know the family was in either Maury County or Marshall County. I think she died in childbirth but it may have been an illness since two other relatives died the same summer, her mother and a sister. It seems like there would have been a newspaper, or a church record. Unfortunately their church may not have been recognized by the Presbyterian Church although they were called Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The family story my aunt got decades ago was that they moved south to Hardin County and she died there. I find a land purchase there, and one for her brother. But there are court records of her husband working on roads in Lewisburg in 1836. And their youngest son believed he was born in Lewisburg in 1837. So either he was wrong about the year, or she was alive until 1837 and it was recorded in the family bible wrong. Can anyone give me some direction with this? I've been trying to find anything about her life or death for over a decade. I would greatly appreciate any help at all. I will pay if necessary, but I have helped others find documents and answers without charging.

Q. When adding a record do I cite the source for individual data pieces that are incorrect? Example: if I already have the correct birthdate and a new record has Abt. 1840, I wouldn’t check the box to overwrite the full date, but do I uncheck cite source for birthdate but cite source for new information? Or am I citing the source because it belongs to my person? Thanks for great start. I have cleanup to do from accepting other’s trees and incorrect hints without thorough research. 😬 😆
@AncestryAimee
@AncestryAimee 5 күн бұрын
That’s a terrific question. I often still leave the source checked as it confirms the general date but that’s an interesting idea. I don’t worry much about multiple sources citing a fact - even if they are off. I often in the description state where the specifics came from. I think you should do what feels best for you. Just be consistent.
@DeniseMSimpson
@DeniseMSimpson 5 күн бұрын
@@AncestryAimee Thanks for the reply. A deeper question is how it affects the algorithms for finding hints or sources if I’m confirming “off data”. Perhaps I’ll reach out to Ancestry to dive deeper. I would add: BE CAREFUL! Make sure there is no information in your tree that you do not want others to view (adoptions, illegitimacy, LGBTQ status, etc.) You also want to make sure any living people's information is share-able, because the viewer will see living information. I've heard too many horror stories of people whose private information was shared without their knowledge or consent, simply because someone shared an Ancestry tree and forgot the information was there, or didn't realize the living info could be seen by a visitor.
@AncestryAimee

You can use autosomal DNA for identifying a 3rd great grandparent. I’d recommendancestry.com as they have the largest database, and therefore the most potential matches.

I also found a document that verified that a third great grandfather was born in Dutchess County, New York in 1807. Up to now that had been a hypothesis.
