thank you for the experiment with detailed commentary! I was wondering if the sodium hydrogen carbonate solution does anything other than making the ph higher (like messing with the digestion of the acids, etc)??
@sixthformbiology3402 ай бұрын
For us, just alters the pH. Hopefully it does not alter anything else. In science we hopefully adjust one variable whilst having no other effects!

Hello! Can i replace sodium carbonate with any other base? Like KOH and how much should I put of it? Also, does the milk have to be fresh? Can I use boxed milk?
@sixthformbiology3405 ай бұрын
We have never used any other base. Sodium carbonate is cheap, safe and easy to use. You can use boxed milk or powder milk...just make sure it is full fat! Good luck

Hi, I am doing an experiment where I test the rate of respiration using different types of sugar. Is it normal that the colour change happens more quickly in my control trial (with only yeast and water) compared to the trial where I use glucose as a substrate. Shouldn't the trial with glucose change colour more quickly? please answer, I am a bit stuck.
@sixthformbiology340 Жыл бұрын
You are correct. There should be no colour change in your control where there is no substrate glucose, as there should be no respiration. So something has gone wrong. Maybe a mix up with tubes, or your control has some glucose present when it was made up by the technician...
@TashaDee0510 ай бұрын
@@sixthformbiology340 Just to add to this question we're currently trialling this practical with different percentages of glucose yesterday I found the solution with a higher % of glucose took longer to go colourless (back to yeast colour) we're kind of confused we thought it would be quicker the more glucose we used.
@sixthformbiology34010 ай бұрын
@@TashaDee05 Hi, Yes we would expect that also. It may depend on what %. For example, you may like 1x hamburger, but you may not work faster with 2x hamburger!
@TashaDee0510 ай бұрын
@@sixthformbiology340 Thank you, we've been asked to make a 1% yeast solution with 1%, 5% & 10% glucose after looking online a bit more we might be using the wrong yeast we've got the fast action. Its just odd we've trialled the practical twice now and got the same results.

@sixthformbiology340 Жыл бұрын
You always need units! 25 could be C or F...so need to say which one. It is always so someone else could see your method then go away and do it from your instructions. What size syringe should they use? Tell them!
