I wonder exactly what you thought espoused hate in Dave Chapelles special?
@schticktoscript5 күн бұрын
@@MrKelso85 there were a few moments. I first felt pained when he spoke of punching the masc lesbian in the face, and nearly all his trans material made me weep. I am not the only queer person who felt this way… hundreds spoke out about it. I was watching the special with my trans ex-girlfriend [we were both fans of his until that point].. she was angry, but I was actually crying. Trans women face so much violence as it is, hearing the crowd laugh at some of that material felt like a justification for that violence so it cut deep. It’s been years since I watched it, and it caused me so much pain that I won’t watch it agsinn[anx I cancelled my Netflix membership over it anyway], but I will say that I watched his SNL monologue the other week and it was brilliant BECAUSE HE WAS NOT PUNCHING DOWN.

Thank you for this video and response, I’m currently doing a masters thesis taking on the insanely tough challenge of justifying punching down, I don’t disagree with anything you say and actually I think it’s a well measured articulate response which is what we need more of if we are to “find and adhere to a line” , I am not queer I’m white hetro but recently extremely disabled so I find myself reconsidering some of my “darker” jokes in an effort to discover if punching down if done properly can even be an effective tool to highlight inequality and subconscious bias. Deep down I love everyone and I want too believe there is a method too explore sometimes dark offensive comedy without people feeling punched

@ this is so interesting! I have a comedy writing student who has CP and is a stand-up in LA and I adore him but was really upset by the fact that had a lot of hate speech towards women and gay men in his Feature script and his argument was that it was not possible for him to punch down as a disabled man. I said that may be true - maybe - but why kill the chances of selling your script? Are studios really going to invest millions into a script that offends to that degree [also, only he found it funny, but he was the only substantially disabled person in the class]. I can introduce you if you email me at mondocinema at gmail if it will help your thesis [if he agrees to the intro]

"You'll re-visit that logline throughout the writing and re-writing process and hone in on the specifity of your character and what could make an audience want watch this movie or TV show" I wish I'd known this when I just first started writing... I use to spend way too much time looking for a perfect logline that id produce me the worst writer's block. And even worse, sometimes Id have better ideas but couldnt really include them on the project cos they could contradict or be a detriment to the logline.

"First of all there is no right or wrong on art." Thanks for the great insight, as usual. And yeah, wholeheartedly agree. You've got geniuses like Buñuel or Pasolini who kept breaking all rules and reached iconic status due to it

"One thing we [script supervisors and screenwriters] both share is the love of the script itself". I think this is a very understated argument in favor of the craft. When you love what you're doing things just naturally fall in place. Some of my best dialogues and scenes have come from pure enjoyment of the act of writing.

Hey Daniela. Im an author turned screenwriter and couldn't agree more with the transferable skills bit. Writing scripts for graphic novels also helped me going through an easier transition from pure text to audiovisual format. "If youre the screenwriter youre gonna have to decide what to keep". Great insight. Wouldve loved to know this when i wrote my first scripts hahaha. Cos a lot of things that make a great novel doesnt translate very well on the screen per se

"More often than not this is not the result ot malicious intent from Producers but rather a lack of understanding by newer Producers on what our role actually is." Very good take. "Never atribute to malice what can be atributed to incompetence".

@@schticktoscript yeah english kind of works now, at least it seems to get more common for italians to be able to speak it. it always feels bad if you arent able to speak a language as a tourist. at least for me.
