Although the opera was not built, they did achieve their goal. What more could you want? With Kinski and Herzog, it was all possible in the movie. It's hardly possible today.

An incredible movie with an amazing cast. What an ending! Even though Fitz didn't get his opera house, he learned that the journey sometimes is greater than the end goal. His smile at the end proved the journey was worth it. Brava!

Fitzcaraldo keeps his eyes on the jungle. He knows that the dead monkeys rise if Caruso sings in just the right manner. The Mexican prophet Tannio has said this. The big Mexican fire builder is Tannio's grandson. Fitzcaraldo misses his pet monkey, Barrio, whom he knew from childhood. Tannio has said how to make the monkey rise. Fitzcaraldo says, "Yes, this is where we buried him, along the Amazon, here at drought season, with the setting of the moon." But the flood waters are too much, and there is no true Caruso. Fitzcaraldo cannot remember the exact site. His memory fails him. The rivier has changed everything. Fitzcaraldo must make due with the present operatic singers from Lima. But no monkeys rise. It is yet flood season, but Fitzcaraldo is glad for the day. This is all that he can ask. Fitzcaraldo smokes his big Panatella. Rosemarie greets the native indians, but not a one has found Barrio. Barrio lives only in Fitzcaraldo's memory. Fitzcaraldo is happy. He is happy for what memories remain.
