Very nice, sweet and nice. I can only imagine the effect it had on Union soldiers in the Civil War. The "Battle Cry of Freedom", also known as "Rally 'Round the Flag" (1862), roused a patriotic spirit and spread through the army camps like wildfire and became so popular - a Southern composer and lyricist also adapted it for use by the Confederacy (with much different words and meaning of course)!

Wow, I've been looking for this for years! I heard this on, of all places, an Australian radio reading service for the blind, 990 in Perth. They used to play mostly easy-listening tracks between readings of newspapers, and this was one they played for a little while. I loved it so much I learnt by ear how to play it on piano myself ... but could never track it down, not even the title of the piece, until now! It feels a bit weird to learn that I was playing an American Civil War song ... but it's still a great tune ...

Per Shelby Foote: Marching Union soldiers, grown weary of this song, would sometimes substitute other verses, such as: "Mary had a little lamb, it's fleece was white as snow, Shouting the battle cry of freedom! And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go, Shouting the battle cry of freedom!"
