Looks like the project has just dropped the Orange Pi platform. Such a shame, I have 3 Orange Pi based hotspots running WPSD at the moment and they're not receiving updates any more.
@D4000-u7e27 күн бұрын
Thank you, exactly the question I had today, and have just found out about WPSD, and a newbie to pi-star. That the hardware install of the MMDVM took 5 minutes, and the software took best part of 2 hours, I am always looking for a simpler way to do things, because unlike fellow hams that love to build, I want to communicate ! Cheers
@clavell3028 күн бұрын
I tried both. At the end, i decided to use WPSD, as it has much more configurable possibilities. As a bit downside, it seems to me that WPSD required a bit stronger hardware; but, still, it is worth to use. Also, Pi-Star frequently freezes my Orange PI Zero H3 hotspot....i do not know, why, but WPSD does not produce this.

Nice work! I'm looking to try Meshtastic. I'm a 100% mobile ham operator; so, I'm probably going to add Meshtastic to my car. Question: What antenna do you have, the vertical wire with two open coils? I have a very similar antenna on my 900 MHz ham radio, except that it's gray. The person who gave it to me has no idea who makes it or its specs... only that it works and that he manages to find more at ham fests. Since you have a similar one, and it looks new, I'm hoping that you may know more. Thanks! -Scott

Do you know where you got the file for that tdeck case? I’ve tried a few but that small loop would really come in handy.

I purchased the same setup from Amazon and I cannot get the RPi 5 to boot the WPSD image. I have tried new SD cards and verified the hash; that new RPi 5 boots fine into the RP OS. I have used the RP Imager as well as Balena but same result; what am I missing??
@SignalSphereFoundationАй бұрын
There is a separate image that supports Raspberry Pi5 I would double check the version that you downloaded to make sure it says it supports Raspberry Pi5 specifically.
@lunarthief6501Ай бұрын
Do you have any data on signal strength between these two antenna types? Is there any notable difference?
@SignalSphereFoundationАй бұрын
For outdoor/mobile use I would use a high gain antenna rated for 915 MHz specifically.

I have Starlink and it's absolutely awful. The speeds are terrible, especially during peak hours, and it's insanely expensive. It was great a few years ago, but it's clearly not a scalable solution and is being heavily oversold

The antenna is a 5/8 vertical dipole encased in carbon fiber with an N connector. It weighs almost nothing. The heaviest part is the N connector itself.

I built almost the exact same setup - same box, USB-powered, different antenna, and used an M8 connector instead of the waterproof cable passthrough. Works great! I 3D printed my own mounting plate for the radio and used a Rak Wireless mini Wisblock starter kit.

Those ranges are wildly optimistic for the average meshtastic deployment.

Really cool tech, I wish such things were avaliable when I was a kid in the 80s/90s. There is an app called FireChat that does mesh with cell phones "shorter distances", but I never tried it. I also heard a few more carriers "Starlink partnering with T-Mobile for one" are going to release satellite to cell services, but you would need a cell phone with that kind of antenna.
