This was the best version of the death scene. So much of this movie is great because of what they could NOT do with special effects, so they dumped those shots for more mysterious ones. Interestingly, it looks like the shark rolls over after he bites him, like a crocodile would, but in reality, the mechanical shark just fell. We were supposed to the the kid get bit in half, but the scenes just didn't look good.

the guy who is throwing the stick for his dog, just before Alex is killed you see him calling for his dog and the stick floating in the water with a bit of blood on it. Even though he still hasn't found his dog and doesn't know its fate (its implied to us that it got eaten), he immediately jumps into the water and starts helping kids out of the water. Never have I been so pissed for a character that their dog dies.
