What’s your opinion of the Stew Mac LP kits? I love them, they make and sell the best tools. Great Company with an awesome guitar maker and so many excellent guitar people.
@erickaufmancustomguitars135119 күн бұрын
I built two of these kits. I kept the second one. Great kit, great fun. The top is too thin to stain. Where the glue seeped too deep from the rear of the veneer, it will not accept stain. Go with tinted laquer for better results. I don't recall having this issue with the first kit, it may have been there nonetheless. Where "they" (I'd bet big money its Chinese) decided to drill the body for the bridge studs is too short. That means you cannot properly intonate it when its completed. I'd recommend you dry fit the neck and install the bridge and take some measurements before gluing in the neck. I'd try this Canadian company before I'd fool with this kit again. I didn't know any better at the time, but today I'd NEVER recommend any kit guitar company I've ever bought from before. Unfortunately including this one. But your absolutely right about their tools and services. Glad this kit is no longer available for a handful of reasons. Seriously, what am I supposed to do now to fix it ? Get a big 70's style harmonica style bridge ? Or worse yet, move the studs and go with a solid color after the re-design ? Guitar kit world is garbage 2 out of 3 times, the worst of them in my opinion. I can't even remember the other companies but all have a flaw. Controll cavites routed beyond what the pickguard can cover, pickups poles not lining up (yenfente-8m looking at you !) Under strings, g spacing on f style bridges. Bridges that wont adjust because they don't bother with decent hardware or even materials. Cheap wires, cheap pots, crap keys, plastic that belongs on hondos. Try precision kits outta Canada. I couldn't attest, but IF I were nutty enough to try another it'd be from their customer reputation.

About the same price, just not as collectible as the vintage Fender stuff. The necks and fretwork are top notch! Pick ups are so amazing. Your 350 got you a great player I’m sure. Thank you so much for sharing. Thanks for following.

I played a 9.5 for a long time, no complaints, I love the 7.25 as well, the 12’s are great but if your into the radius for your preference, I totally get it. 9.5 is my favorite though! Thanks again.
@davidratliff8072 ай бұрын
I would like to clarify something for everybody, the radius of the neck on a telecaster or a Stratocaster, I will explain this in detail because usually I just round it up and make it a easier to remember but the technical radius which means the curvature of the neck, when they were originally built in the 50s and 60s it was a 7.25, today’s guitars are mostly 9.5, the modern series on a lot of the fender stuff is 12, Gibson, and a lot of the other shredder type guitars, they have an extremely flat radius of 12, 14 and 16. Several people had called me out on that so I thought I would explain this because it really doesn’t matter for a kit, but I am a builder, so technically here it is instead of a 7.5 it is a 7.25. I just rounded it up a quarter inch so it would be easier to understand. There are so many great guitar players out there that caught this and called me on it. I appreciate that very much and as far as the Yosemite Pickups, I called them as in Yose- Mite, which is clearly not correct but it is pretty simple to remember, but it is like Yosemite Sam if you’re old enough to remember the cartoon or the famous national park. I just wanted to clarify that with everybody thank you so much for your comments I really appreciate everybody for watching the channel. I am having a great time explaining about kit guitars and guitars in general. I’m going to be doing much more stuff on the guitars that I have made and I’m making. Some people may have noticed I do not edit anything I just do it on one take and if I make a mistake, I try to correct myself very quickly. I want it to seem like I am talking to a person directly across from me, nothing is scripted and I don’t really think anything out. I just start talking about the product. 😂 Thank you again, David Ratliff Guitars

Many Mexican Fenders are very good guitars - especially if you need a moderate priced workhorse.
@davidratliff8072 ай бұрын
Your 100% correct, i’m finding out after being a USA, only guy for so long, that the parts that they use on a lot of the guitars are made in Mexico anyway, the last Nashville that I got a few months ago was my favorite guitar on a review, I get on three of them, so that is saying a huge shout out to the quality of these guitars. A long time ago, I was teaching in a guitar store, and I remember the stuff coming out of Mexico that was fender telecaster or Stratocaster and they were not good at all just taking them off the rack and playing them, now I did not give them a chance. But this is also been 25 years ago, but now things are completely different. I would definitely look at the player series 1st and thank you for commenting.
@Guitars-N-Guns2 ай бұрын
Do you mean 7.25 or is it custom 7.5?
@davidratliff8072 ай бұрын
Yes of course, a lot of new guitar players don’t understand neck radius, 🤣, so I just rounded it up a 1/4 inch to make it easier to remember 7.5-9.5, 12-14. I have several 7.25 which are some of my favorites. The original radius. Thanks so much for the question, several people called me on that and I would too…. But for the new guys buying kits or new guitars, it’s kind of a rare radius these days. 9.5 is Fenders standard or 12 modern. Much easier to bend without hitting the fret from the radius. I’m sure you clearly know this. I don’t actually have a 7.5 or made one, made several 7.25, I love them. Thank you for your question. I’m a Fender guy since I was 16 and a blond Tele at that. Thanks again!

Enjoyed your Telecaster collection. Question, just recently started to learn at 73 with fat arthritis fingers. I want a Telecaster to go with the acoustic I already purchased. Neck radius and fret size recommendations for my fat fingers? Thanks again!
@davidratliff8072 ай бұрын
That is great!!!? Get whatever is comfortable in your hands, try some very light strings to learn on, I recommend 9-42 or 8-38 DAdario or Ernie ball… Go slow and have fun, learn your basic chords EFGABCD, then start playing notes on each string. Congratulations it’s so fun, and you are getting a Tele. Pick the one that your hand feels the best on. They have all types. I would recommend the 9.5 radius, it’s a standard with medium jumbo frets as they have on most guitars. Try the player series, and if that’s not right try the USA teles. Many types, just try them out. Thank you for your question, I hope this helps…

Do you find your hands get more or less fatigued with any particular neck style? I am in my 40s, but my hands have been heavily abused between football and physical labor, and I get a bit of cramping if I’m holding barre chords for too long. I feel, at times, like the more rounded radius on my 7.25” tele compared to my Gibson’s 12” radius really helps alleviate or delay the hurting but I can’t quite make up my mind if I’m imagining it or not. I do find the narrower, vintage width takes some getting used to compared to I’m currently building a strat partscaster and contemplating an aftermarket neck to go on it. Leaning toward a 7.25” radius with a fuller 1.695” nut width and a fairly thick profile (either ‘59 or Boatneck by Warmoth nomenclature).
@davidratliff8072 ай бұрын
Excellent choice, I believe the 7.25 radius, sometimes I call it the 7.5 just round it up a little bit is extremely comfortable. That is the original Fender radius that was used back in the 50s and 60s and it naturally fits your hand. On the other side, the flatter radius is what most people use to play much faster because of their no curvature approach. I guess it’s probably all in the muscles in your hand and what you are used to. I truly believe it is an individual thing on guitars with the neck radius. Hopefully the pain in your hand gets better. I would think the vintage radius would be more pleasing if you are playing more chords, and the flatter the radius, such as a 12 or a 14 is going to make you able to play much faster in most cases. Thank you so much for your comment. I hope that answers your question.

Actually on a guitar kit like this it’s really not that difficult, it depends whether you want to actually paint the guitar or stain it, they have so many products today that make it so easy. Let me know what you wanna do and I will walk you through it.
@Mr.PhatsVarietyVibesShow10 күн бұрын
ure right those kits sound good on paper ,but all the work that has to go into it is just way too much work for a hobbyists. the money could be spent towards a used Ibanez, & if need be we could change out the weaker parts for better parts. This kit in my opinion sounds fun, but in reality it's a money pit when we factor in the cost of paint, primer, base coat, sand paper, & cutting tools. For me to shape the head stock I would have to buy some clamps & a coping saw & some fine tools wrapped around some sandpaper to fine sand the shape into form.. tools are not cheap.. & to paint it I would have to spend a ton on paint ; paint is not cheap & clear coat isn't cheap either, & that neck fret board would have to be clear coated to protect the wood, & if we decide to dye the back of the neck to give it that dark roasted look, well that isn't cheap either, & let's not forget how many cans of paint we need the steps are, paint, sand, paint ,sand ,& then we need a buffer & buffing kit with buffing cream. All those things are expensive.. Have you ever been to home depot? with all the tools needed we could be into this guitar a few 100 dollars, & let's not forget when it's all said & done we might find out the pickups aren't that good, so we then have to reinvest in pickups & a harness & a soldering gun the kit that it comes with is plug & play so the harness has to be changed out. I don't see how a hobbyist that doesn't have wood working skills can pull it off.. for the average person this kit it way too much work to spend weeks in the garage. I would say when it's all said & done this project will cost several 100 dollars more . this kit would make sense if it came already painted & we just put it together... I think those kits based on my opinion are a waste of time..
@davidratliff80710 күн бұрын
A kit should be good enough for tools around the house or a minimum investment, just put the kit together and no finish except sanding? Kits can’t compete with mass produced guitars, but it is something you put together, get a bit of knowledge and build off your initial build. Your right 100% about tools and time, the way I look as a guitar maker is a kit guitar for the new player, or something to piece by piece to build on. A person can always buy a budget guitar of online stores from 89-? The whole point is ease of building without trying to create a Custom all USA part guitar, using tools you have probably in your tool box. Your ideas are 100% correct though looking at it like that, your not going to get a high end guitar from a kit without extensive knowledge and time but I can’t make what they are selling for under 100 dollars, I’m trying to stress a guitar for a brand new player that is a minimal investment. I really thank you for your well thought out response, I’ve had many of the same thoughts myself. We make and sell all handmade guitars we make here in Fl and it’s a total different instrument with many hours and special tools with years of building behind but the cost for the best we can do is a whole other world. Thank you again for your response! A kit is awesome for the money, I’ve even thought about making some kits that are finished before and a person could buy and put together with tools provided in the kit itself? Thank you for watching and please keep your comments coming, I want to hear every point I haven’t thought of. Good, bad or indifferent! Have a great day.
@davidratliff80710 күн бұрын
Thank you so much, great points. I responded below with a few of my thoughts about kits. I wish more would comment about kits in your way of thinking! 🤔, your a thinker and that’s a huge part of guitars. We don’t use a CNC machine, we have created a jig for so many occasions for necks, and body’s. Kits and handmade instruments are a whole different world but for the newer guitar player it’s a pretty good investment with a minimal price, you can allay build on or leave as is. Thank you again, please pass the word about this channel and our custom shop will be coming out with a KZbin channel showing the actual making and parts and the thought process we use. 👏🏼, thank you again, I wish I had many more comments like yours. Good or bad I want to hear real comments about guitars. Kit or custom or online or store bought.

@davidratliff8072 ай бұрын
@davideatwell6577 Thank you so much for your comment, that blue should look really nice. Yes the Brent Mason model is on the expensive side but the after market parts are off the charts great! They started out several hundred less, and people were buying so many, the price seemed to have jumped? The B bender itself is a 500 dollar bill at least, and you have to ship your guitar, that’s expensive. The Duncan’s pups are top shelf, sperzels have been around forever! Funny how a Fender guitar using so many after market parts is a statement to what the most recorded guitarist in history is using on his old 67. Parts are very expensive and most every company is trying to use the cheapest parts they can? I don’t like the price either but as a maker, it’s a pricey build buying those parts, and the Glaser bender which is world class. That’s all just my take on it but yes it’s on the expensive side, I should have gotten one 3 years ago when they were around 2k? That was a very fair price and the big boys were still making money. Still cheaper than a Les Paul Custom 😂😅😂 at least at ????? Thank you for your thoughts, I hope this answer is helpful.

@davidratliff8073 ай бұрын
Yes, it is a telecaster style in shape and looks. Naturally, it does not follow the pattern of the older single coil pups or with the trem system on a Stratocaster since 1954, but that body design is definitely a telecaster style. Thank you so much for bringing that up, I don’t think the kit maker was trying to copy the telecasters of the 50s-80s but of the newer generation that have Humbuckers, and a Tremelo system are part of the new style of some of these models. I personally love the old ones but I still think that the cost on a guitar kit that is this nice for under $100 is unbelievably great. I think most people can at least afford one or save towards it.
