There is only two bad parts about this job. One, the cook is the only person actually working on a moving ship, except the engineer on some ships. Most of the crew just sit in a chair 90% of the float. Trust me, being the only guy working can play with your mind after you get tired and sore. Two When it is rough out the boat rocks and rolls. 12 hours of this while on your feet uses every single muscle in your feet and legs to balance. This makes you sore and way more tired than the same shift on land. The best feeling for me, a single guy, was going to sea and leaving every single "land" problem behind. Life gets simple.

Any grey hull sailor would ask what are you b!itching about? Yeah, the food is probably better and if you aren't on a small boy or sub you have direct access to better medical but here's the big difference. If you aren't at the end of your commitment you will have to go out again whether you like it or not.

Interested in how taxes work. Maybe sort of boring, but since a lot of shipped aren't registered in the US, how does that work? If you're in an RV, what state do you clam residency? Do you get paid in a check? Be curious to see your expenses breakdown on and off ship?

I avoided jobs that seperated me from my Family. No amount of money is worth that. Family first. When my career eventually required lengthy travel around the US, I was at a point I could hire/pay my Wife to accompany me as my secretary/payroll clerk. It worked out wonderfully until retirement age.

I'm Retired US Coast Guard Chief Electrician, spent most of my career aboard ships 2 Ice breakers, 1 Bouy tender, and one High endurance cutter. then in my final 6 years doing Maintenance and repair on 18 different River tenders. And yes, food was a definite morale booster on every vessel. When I retired in 1988, I was very interested in the merchant marine, however, my wife had her fill of me being gone from home most of the time, so she won! But my heart still said, "Underway is the only way"! so watching your vid's are fantastic. Oh, by the way the sea going Coast guard did spend a lot of time underway. Ice Breakers were at least 6 month tours the High endurance Cutters were gone from 30-day patrols to 90-day training with the US Navy. A buoy tender could be anywhere from 1 week to a month. then even though my time working on the rivers wasn't actual underway time my team would spend at the least 280 days a year away from home 18 vessels within a 22 State area, known as the "Western River System"

Who famously said that being on a ship at sea, was like being in prison with the chance of drowning. As someone who has some time at sea I can attest to the validity of that statement. When it’s good it is good but when it’s bad it is very bad.

24 to 30 hours multiple plane flights to and from the ship. Time off, great if you are not spending weeks in crappy hotels while taking required classes and courses.
