I have just started to use these so this video is really helpful expanding my collection. I use Sennelier Green for Oil thinner to blend out the pastels on the page. Then you can draw on the page with colored pencils while the thinner is still a little damp. It works very well on a Stillman and Birn Zeta sketchbook.
@sfcpaints2 ай бұрын
Yep I use it sometimes too. Also works well with the Neocolor IIs, if you draw into the thinner while it's still damp!

Thank-you! I have been wondering about the oil sticks, they look beautiful. However I am very sensitive to odors so thank you for telling us about the smell! That green matisse is gorgeous !

Thanks for sharing… I painted a lot in my Pith sketchbook, they definitely play nice with acrylic paint. I’m interested in those oil sticks but how long does it take for it to completely dry? And do you have to use a fixative afterwards?
@sfcpaints2 ай бұрын
It takes about 3 or 4 days to completely dry. Thin applications will be totally dry but thicker applications will still have a tiny bit of tackiness. I'd still use fixative if I was painting something that I planned to sell, but for a sketchbook piece I wouldn't bother. In the case of thicker applications, I'd still stick a piece of tissue paper or something between my sketchbook pages to make sure nothing sticks.

I can totally relate to your process as an illustrator wanting to explore more of an abstract or painterly artistic expression. I find it hard to let go of the illustrative aspects and embrace the free flow of creating a piece that is intuitive and just fun. Enjoyed watching you try out new mediums and tools and enjoy the process. Been trying collage but still find it leans towards the illustrative more than the abstract. Might have to try some of your techniques. Keep creating.

It's so tricky, isn't it? Like when you want to take a more painterly approach you have to tuck your illustrator self into a closet in your brain

What type of paper do you use for your sketchbooks?

This one is a blank notebook from Archer and Olive. The paper is 160gm with a smooth finish.

I love a good 5 minute sketch. I have two toddlers and it's extremely difficult to find quiet time just for artmaking. Recently, I have been carrying a mini sketchbook in my bag and I whip it out at cafés, family gatherings, or even in the car. Nothing legendary is created inside it but it keeps me sane and my creativity flowing!
