I can totally relate to your process as an illustrator wanting to explore more of an abstract or painterly artistic expression. I find it hard to let go of the illustrative aspects and embrace the free flow of creating a piece that is intuitive and just fun. Enjoyed watching you try out new mediums and tools and enjoy the process. Been trying collage but still find it leans towards the illustrative more than the abstract. Might have to try some of your techniques. Keep creating.

It's so tricky, isn't it? Like when you want to take a more painterly approach you have to tuck your illustrator self into a closet in your brain

I love a good 5 minute sketch. I have two toddlers and it's extremely difficult to find quiet time just for artmaking. Recently, I have been carrying a mini sketchbook in my bag and I whip it out at cafés, family gatherings, or even in the car. Nothing legendary is created inside it but it keeps me sane and my creativity flowing!

I need to know something! your illustrations were on RGB mode? Were there at any point you changed to CMYK mode or you stick through RGB until final artwork? I love your work process and the output itself, it’s soooo amazing!
@sfcpaints
@sfcpaints 3 ай бұрын
I work in RGB because the files sizes are much smaller but I use a CMYK color picker in Photoshop so when I need to convert my files to CMYK before sending them to a publisher there isn't any color shift. If you're new to publishing and not used to the more limited color range in CMYK, I'd recommend just working in CMYK.

Ha! Some of my watercolor crocus look like paw prints, however! … I had fun just swirling around the brush, and getting mesmerized by the colors doing their own things. I used mixed media paper, but tomorrow, I am going to quality watercolor paper. Next week I am going to try prepping the background with gouache. I want to experience adding water based white to acrylic gouache. Thanks for the tip, Steph. I am going to keep up crocus repetition as long as Steph does.

In our practice, we should include, repetitions??!! Yeah, I know I really should, but I don’t. I think this is one of my creative downfalls. I need to put stuff in my attic, then use it, rather than let it crumple into dust.
@sfcpaints

yep you really should 😃 way back when i was trying to develop a style for kid's books, i set myself a challenge to draw birds every week and all that iteration of the same subject matter really helped me find my style and artistic voice. and i love practicing iteration in my sketchbook because i get a chance to follow the "what ifs" and end up learning so much more than i would have if i'd just stopped with one single drawing of a subject matter.

I’ve really been enjoying this challenge. Thank you for putting it out there. I’ve been doing watercolor for about a year so I’m still getting the hang of it. Five minutes is doable and I love your optimism at finding something in each picture that you like. I’m ok following tutorials but I haven’t created anything of my own yet. This is helping me see the process of that.

that's wonderful! in my work as a children's book illustrator, I worked entirely digital for a decade and when i started working in a sketchbook again it was so frustrating to not be able to create at the same level as my digital illustration work. Making a point to find something I liked about every sketchbook page really helped me keep going plus I think as artists we tend to be extra hard on ourselves so having the extra boost of positivity is just helpful in general. good luck with your watercolor journey!

I love the the objective of this challenge - making easy, low-stress art. And, I did it! For 5 days! I liked the idea of my art table being prepped for each day without changing supplies. Although, I must admit I went over 5 minutes, but each day I spent less and less time. Regarding the peony exercise, you said you would focus on the leaves at one point. I noticed the leaves had 5 lobes, yours at most had 3. Do you think your interpretation simplified the leaf shapes in order to enhance page composition? I have difficulty in deciding what to simplify and omit.

For me a lot of the joy in these quick sketchbook sessions is that there isn't time to ponder for too long nor criticize what I've done. I'd say in the moment my aim was to capture some pointy leaves and that's about it 😆 Charley Harper has a quote his bird paintings that goes something like "I don't count the feathers, I just count the wings" and that's a good summation of my approach to sketchbook practice. Low fuss, lots of fun.
