I still personally think the combined Rio, bhp, fmg, and Roy hill iron mines, rail and port facilities are the greatest construction project ever. The simple perspective of "how many airports did we build?".. and that's just effectively construction indirects. peripheral jobs like minres are all part of this too, I just didn't include that. You can also combine the iron ore with the WA LNG plants to fully appreciate everything

Dear Darrin, I recently watched your KZbin video on agile in construction, and I couldn't help but relate to it. Having worked as a supervisor and welder in the construction industry, I've experienced both waterfall and agile methodologies in action since the beginning of my career. Now, I'm making a significant shift into the technology space, but I'm struggling to translate my construction experiences into a technology-focused resume. I see the parallels between the two industries, especially in tools like Jira, but I'm having difficulty putting it all down on paper. I'm wondering if you could help me bridge the gap between these two fields and assist me in crafting a resume that showcases my transferable skills. Your insights and guidance would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Best regards,

when its comes to DAX, measures, calc columns, what to do in power query, what to manipulate in the source data files - its all just a dogs breakfast. Personally I suck as DAX. Althuogh, in general, I have also found that even people properly trained in this stuff screw everything up too.

There are a few harsh realities of PowerBi that mean that unless you are working in a team with other data professionals, and have a pipeline of projects and clarity in vision for a more app like experience - most everything just gets tossed in the bin, or rebuilt with every new project. Therefore, unless you want to chain yourself to be a support person 24/7, nobody really has incentives to do anything in power (because nobody else in your org can support it except YOU!). This was exactly why all the slick and useful MS Access databases of the 2000s disappeared. This delicate balance between tech support and project delivery is something the engineering and construction business (and likely most businesses are struggling with at the moment).

your transforms are an ideal case for PQ, either inside PBI, or in your excel. The value of PBI is that it will then use the native export and can be easily used/maintained by others.

I don't agree much about the umbilical swing arm, I believe that would introduce another process that will slow down the launch cadence, need human interaction and lower the overall reliability of the system. Starship already has a quick disconect in the bottom for in orbit refueling, wich is indispensable for the whole system to work, so the right way to fuel the ship would be to have a quick disconect on the booster and feed the fuel through the booster, that would eliminate a lot of parts and a lot of steps, and can very well be easily automated.

@@darrinkinney2268 Until we see insulated piping being installed to or on the tower, I think it's safe to assume that the yellow tube structure is one of the tower arms that will function like a rocket elevator/crane and simultaneously steady Starships and boosters during stacking. If you've seen those smaller prefabricated black structures that look a lot like crane trusses, I'd say those have a better chance of being some kind of swinging umbilical arm, though I'm personally doubt that SpaceX won't just fuel Starship through Super Heavy (in spite of RGV's claim)

I have showcased a use case where Jira is integrated into a process with powerbi. The underlying data isn't integrated however before you can even discuss data integration, work process integration is in my mind more fundamental. And.. can lead to smarter data integration later. Too often people simply want to pull Jira data into powerbi. But again the value in Jira is actually the work process it brings. My thoughts. I'll stick with my title.

why not use the p6 Report tool? data is formatted automatically..
@darrinkinney2268
@darrinkinney2268 4 жыл бұрын
I prefer simply copy-paste from P6. I've never gotten mileage from the reports. But, nothing would stop someone from doing that, if their preference. It would be nearly identical to what I have done. For schedule date data, I really like the way I can customize the 3 datasets: Baseline, Prior, and Current. Dealing with that inside P6 can be annoying. With each dataset being a simple copy-paste from the schedule you want to use, very flexible too. The way I handle the resource assignment time phased data is a bit ugly, but it works. At some point i'll highlight the actual data model. Most of this series is more aligned to the typical ETL process to get the data into a better format. If you would present this formally, you would first start with the final data model (how you actually get there, is not specifically an issue).

You spoke my mind that is it. Construction sites will certainly not be testing several units of in-situ slabs and releasing them to users (expensive and unrealistic) over a period of time in expectation of some feedback loop or learning curve to be achieved. But we can learn a lot from the tenets and principles of Agile. A highly functional team (That is Self-organized with a shared vision that is interdisciplinary or whole team) is critical for effective communication in any construction site. Of course, Construction sites should embrace automated systems and continuous software integration (Kanban and other ERP platforms) over comprehensive documentation.

Hi Darrin, it's really a nice series of videos, very informative and helpful. One question: is it possible that we can view the data inside "Activity_Mapping" and "Import_P6_DataDate" tabs?
@darrinkinney2268
@darrinkinney2268 4 жыл бұрын
activity mapping is just a mapping to the WBS levels for each schedule ID. The import table uses a lot of vlookups to pull in the data into the right format in just 1 table. The mapping tab is just your activity coding structure. The only data imported into the dashboard is only from the 1 table I showcase. No tricks. I found some people were trying to build complex relationships inside powerbi or building huge SQL Server databases to capture the various tables from the XERs. The video highlights how much easier you can really do it by being smart in how you use excel to bridge between P6 and PowerBI. The Import P6 Data Date tab was a failed attempt to pull in the data date. It doesn't do anything. The dashboard uses a measure directly inside powerBI to auto calculate the data date. The calculation uses the Progress table - not the schedule date table. The measure is: ( DataDate1 = CALCULATE(MAX(Progress_All[WeekEnding]), FILTER(Progress_All,Progress_All[SeriesType]="Act")) ). This measure is effectively taking the progress table and filtering on "ACT" (where I merger all the various progress data series). Then just look into weekending and pull the max. That will be the data date.

Excellent, so why do you think many big contractors fail to implement this holistic vision. Greed, perhaps?! Good job!
@darrinkinney2268
@darrinkinney2268 4 жыл бұрын
I think it is mostly ignorance in understanding what is possible and (perhaps more importantly) how to do it. This management approach can't be pushed from the bottom, it needs to be championed by the leadership team (which unfortunately are the least skilled in this domain). You can then dive further into the large consulting companies like Bain, Boston, McK, Deloitte, Accenture etc (who advise our leadership teams) and push these questions to them. I unfortunately do not have the ear of anyone of relevance at this point - which is exactly why I am creating these videos. I really want people to look beyond their PowerBI dashboard hells they have created and refocus to start looking at actual work we do, and how we do it.

@@darrinkinney2268 , well said. And it's really sad that nowadays there is a trend to award contracts to bidders that actually don't have the Program or Project Management expertise or Prj/Prgm Controls skills and culture. That said, it's something that Clients should clearly require from their Contractors to have as a technical requirement, just as Engineering expertise or Zero Incidents HSE records. Good job doing this kind of evangelization. There is still a fair share of EPC&CM organizations with a strong "Prjs&Prgrms oriented cultures", even amongst the worst performers groups, that keep the flame alive. Regards,
