When the migrants came to the bush in Australia, they continued all this racket here, too. Our house was never fully constructed but all these crazy people would rock up with food, alcohol , musical instruments and they'd be carrying on like this all day and all night. Only, in Australia, there were many other different migrants and Aussies, too and nobody understoodxanybody else's language, but that didn't stop them. This racket just went on and on. Sometimes they talked about WW2 and people they knew and how people died. I remember my little brother and me, the only little children there, whom they wrapped up in my father's old army coat and told to go sleep, finding it impossible. We were so tired, cold, hungry, so they gave us this weird food other Europeans had brought to these monster parties. We hated it and wanted vegemite on toast. And wine to drink. We kids didn't know what war was, or about death, but it sounded a bit quieter than this racket when they went all quiet and serious, talked about that. I recall my brother asking me: 'When will they die? I'm tired.' I looked up at night sky with crazy big moon floating among weird clouds, sea waves crashing, strange sounds of Aussie bush animals. 'Maybe soon' I replied and tried to rock and soothe him to sleep. Dawn would break, sun rise, but they're still going. They kept it up till they dropped from exhaustion, slept half an hour, then grabbed picks, shovels, axes etc an all went work, splitting rocks in hot Aussie sun etc. Next weekend, they repeated it all. They were quite seriously crazy. I think that's why I never hardly sleep now. The crazy music keeps playing in my head as I try to sleep but cannot.
