the drums are already leaning a little krautrocky. glenn stays insistent while jeff's guitar splinters above it. it's kind of in-between the official version and the solo version

I'm still traumatized by that krautrock downgrade on the official studio version. I saw them do this version of the song when I saw them live the first time in Toronto the day before YHF came out and I fell instantly in love with it. Great post.

Thanks for sharing. I'm a big fan of this "in-between" version of Wilco, 2002-2003 (not that I don't love the juggernaut that followed and continues on). Just four guys, stripped down. I need to track down a DC bootleg I had from this era, very spare and so much space.

Thanks for sharing! I've always been a (much) bigger fan of this arrangement vs the studio recording. Heard it a number of times live, one of the most notable being SF at Great American Music Hall, around this time in fact.

I taped Jool s Holland every week and this just blew me away. I constantly rewound the video ( I played my video recorder through my stereo system and constantly treated my street to this at full blast. Am sure my then neighbours hated me. Fuck knows I really hated them!). Calexico also performed a brilliant version of Crystal Frontier on the same show with Neko dancing. Am I correct in thinking that this song was only available on the CD single of Crystal Frontier at the time? I am still spellbound by this performance. Play it often and play it loud!
