This Manaia was so good! But those aiulis spoiled his moment. I thought that aiuli were supposed to clear the way for the taupou or manaia, not steal the spotlight from them. Not to mention how ridiculous they were - throwing a chair towards the manaia. Sorry - what? If anything, this was more like highschool hormonal than Faasamoa. Sorry if you don't wanna hear it from the afakasi lol. That was just my two sene. But for real - Samoans overseas really need to think about what our culture is. It's not just about being loud and ridiculous all the time. There's a time and place for everything. When you see how we support the dancers in Samoa, we are respectful. Yes, we have the funny aiulis and they are crack up climbing up poles and whacking banana leaves or whatever, but they know that they should always go BEHIND the taupou or manaia and give them their respect as well. Not like these crazy people who look like they were just jumping for attention. I know how hard it is and the struggle of keeping our identity and culture while in New Zealand as well as getting excited when we can finally express it, but this is not it.

Yes it is a Tongan ngatu but Samoans wear it when they dance. We Tongans wear their fine mats and ngafingafi so it's fair enough. Us Tongans don't wear our ngatu when we are doing a dance we wear a teunga. Theres literally nothing wrong with the Samoans wearing our ngatu coz we use and wear their fine mats
@isaialeuila9327 Жыл бұрын
Ngatu is not exclusive to Tonga. Niue, Hawaii, Fiji, Samoa, UvemoFutuna the cook islands and French Polynesia traditionally make it and wear it too. The Samoan siapo formally known as Vala is made to wear, so they aren't made in big yards like a tongan Ngatu. Therefore Tongan ngatu is common and easily accessible. That is why they are wearing it. But like the other person said, We wear eachothers traditional items. so it doesn't matter. also study your history and further you go back the quicker you come to understand that Samoan and Tonga were the same people.

And for us Fijians,my mom is from Lau. She wears the Tongan tauvala(if that’s how you spell it) because Tonga conquered that province. She wears on special occasions or funerals.

Manaia was the best Ive seen in a while...its wasnt overly feminine his movements , stood up straight , feet keeped apart and 'shuffle ' his feet...not like these mania who glide one side of the stage to the other like a taupou

Yes, that's why I'm here to find a good example for my brother to dance.
A couple of comments mention the screams take away from the dance. Just incase you didn’t realize, this is performed in a full school assembly, during samoan language week, with many many proud samoan teenagers, with many many proud friends cheering their mates. Peace y’all 😍🤩
