Interesting picks for sure, it's all about the home theater experiences! Something I wish publishers did was state how many channels are used in the Atmos tracks, instead all we get is "Sound: Dolby Atmos". On Streaming, Dolby Digital Plus is the delivery format, and that is limited to 8 channels inlcluding LFE (5.1.2). On disc, Dolby TrueHD is used the most which is limited to 16 channels (9.1.6), a stark difference! There's only been a handful of movies that use 9.1.6. Most movies in Atmos are mixed in 7.1.2, with 7.1.4 and beyond becoming increasingly more common. Is the movie I'm watching using 7.1.2, or 7.1.4, or 9.1.6, or anything inbetween? I would like to know before I engage the upmixer, how many channels are in need of upmixing, so that I can better judge where a movie stands on its own, and where it stands on Neural:X, or Auro-Matic upmixing (without having to rely on technical details from AVSForum to find out the real channel usage). The real channel usage can only be made available by people with the right equipment, or software, far from every movie has had its Atmos details revealed. On the flip side, if a movie uses fewer channels but is getting a better result - more refined sound, more accurate placement, more soundstage imaging, then that is truly an impressive feat, versus a movie that uses more channels but achieves fewer of these qualities. I think that there needs to be a industry change, because this has gone on for too long, in my opinion. Thank you very much for the show and your honest thoughts and suggestions, and your top picks for 2024. I will DEFINITELY be picking up the A Quiet Place: Day One, those effects sound so cool and a must to get to experience at least once! What are your thoughts on this, perhaps a topic for next weeks show?

My upgrade path has looked like this: Fat CRT maybe 30"? -> 8 years later -> 32" LCD -> 4 years later -> 48" LCD -> 4 years later -> 65" LCD in the year 2024. 2025 onward -> 77" OLED -> 120" Electric pull down projector screen (or 135"), to get the best of both worlds for gaming and movies. How times change when you get a job and stable income!

OK, on VayCay this week in Hilton Head and had to exit early for dinner. Now I'm getting to the Potter-hatefest - besides having DVD, BR and UHD versions of all 8 flix, there are some great demo scenes - Quibbich contest is #2 is amazing. And battle with 'he who must not be named' in the Part 2 is great. Besides demos scenes, I enjoyed the series, my son is a HP-head having read the whole series of books at least twice... and we have seen every movie in theater to boot. Just sayin' !

Using Kscape as my source, Twisters audio details and dynamics are there and sounds quite goid but I found the levels to be dramatically low…had to increase volume significantly compared to almost every movie I own (disc or Kscape).

It’s the same on the disc (the low level). The dynamics are still limited IMO, even at the higher volume. And, as we said, higher volume doesn’t equal quality! 👍

Very true about twisters.I also thought I had something wrong with my system. I felt the old twister on dvd from years ago was better, especially the score with that ominous music as you know the storm is coming. Will definitely pick up the original on 4K

Just wanted to let DJ know that I did notice a distinct bias towards the right side channels (front Right/wide/surrounds) during episode 5 of the Penguin. All front heavy action, background audio cues and ambience appeared to be locked into the right channels. I did get slightly concerned. The left channels were not totally silent, but drowned out by the busier right side. Definitely a glitch in the matrix. Glad that someone else noticed this anomaly as well.

Picked up Underworld set on KScape for $30!!! $6 per movie is hellofa deal! Last time I watched it was on my computer probably 10 years ago. HOLY CRAP! The audio upmixed bass and surround was outstanding. Growls, shouts, gun blasts, and glass shattering was distinctively located. Bass was shockingly huge and excellent.

How many time you can tell the difference if movie running on K or 4k Blu-ray rip running on your zappiti ?

Certain movies, like Disney or Marvel movies, there is a difference between a 4K Disc and the Kaleidescape version. Disney/Marvel uses 66GB Discs for their 4K Movies and a rough average size of those same movies on Kaleidescape would be around 75GB with a movie like Endgame having about 103GB. All that extra info adds up and the difference is more noticeable the larger the screen size. I’m at 110” and even my wife can see that there is a slight improvement in clarity. When doing a blind A/B test she said, “they both look great but that one (Kaleidescape) is just clearer. The other one (4K Disc) feels like it has a slight film on the screen”. If you’re not doing a very quick A/B switch you’d never notice the difference but when I’ve done it with about a 6 second wait between versions you can see the slight improvement in video quality. The Zappiti is basically the same version as the 4K Disc but depending on your BluRay player (mine is the Panasonic 820) there may be an improvement in the Zappiti version and also a more stable play back experience as some BluRay players have issues playing back the 3 later 100GB Blu Ray discs. At the end of the day though I wouldn’t recommend a Kaleidescape for the audio or video improvements. I’d recommend is for the ease of use and the experience of having all of your collection at your finger tips. THATS why I love mine. Kaleidescape by far is the most rock solid piece of Home Theater equipment I have ever purchased. I’ve never had an issue, and in the world of Technology that’s a VERY rare thing.

Only demo favorite scene feature worth every penny. I got LG 83 G4 TV current using Zappiti 4k pro with new R_volution RVidoe app on it, it’s doing the job. Wanted your opinion with the video quality as it’s massive difference or not. You said clearly I recommend on basis of user experience, which is 100% correct as K has extraordinary controls smoothnesses and quick responsive user interface experience which is incredible and worth every penny. Video and Audio experience is not very massive ‘wow’ difference for under 100” screen tbh. I am thinking to upgrade to Strato V. Only thing I am disappointed with Strato V that it has 1080P UI which doesn’t look great as far I heard. Funny part is Strato C 8 year old model has full 4k UI. Another upgrade I am considering is zappiti newer version the R_volution new 8k Player pro with better power supply and clock but again it has same zappiti experience but slightly faster interface due new chip, faster processor and higher Ram. It’s just launched awaiting for its reviews.

Vinegar Syndrome has a 4k disc of Texas Chainsaw 2 that looks and sounds great! It's a goofier film than the first but i still enjoy it very much.

I had only watched T:Salvation on my computer with headphones. Had to buy it on Kscape after the rave reviews here of the HT experience. Quite good! Lots of LFE and surround sound goodies! Way more enjoyable this time around!!!

Im surprised by the Trap hate. There isnt a twist in the movie, there wasnt one in Knock in the Cabin either. The movie definitely has silly suspend your brain moments, but i thought it was a lot of fun.

Heartbreak ridge is steaming garbage!! It’s almost a Stripes comedy it’s so ridiculous. It’s so far removed from a realistic military training/tactics movie I could not even enjoy it. I can absolutely enjoy Sisu and John Wick. No problem. Heartbreak Ridge….. piss poor writing and story. For shame Clint !!!!

Thanks - I think they are so close as they're mixed for a main consumer format, then converted for the other. DTS:X has an automatic pro advantage if your AVR is capable. On the Denon A1H the speakers switch from two mid heights to centre height and VOG. Also DTX has a better potential of object based audio. But just like you say, it really doesn't matter if the audio didn't have the budget to mix DTS:X correctly from the start. Shame :(

I am sorry to say, that I didnt find top gun Maverick to sound that good. I have a denon avc x4800, and 5.1.2. Maybe its because I only have 2 front hight svs channels, I dont know. Also I have an svs sb3000 and the bass was lacking🥴
