It would be worth you going back through some of older episodes (around this time last year I think) where we did all of the IpMan movies in 4K, Fearless, Hero, Crouching Tiger, Raging Fire etc etc.

My screen is a 110” (diagonal)16:9 screen which is 96” wide. I used 2” Owen’s Corning ridged foam board which is exactly 8’ (96”) wide. I actually had to trim a little off the width because once the foam is wrapped in Velvet it adds to the width. Once cut down to about 1/2” less than the width of the INSIDE of the screen frame and wrapped in Velvet the foam siting inside the frame and is held only by the tension/friction. The foam is light enough that the top mask just holds perfectly. Super easy to pop in and out quickly. If your frame is wider than 96” there is a way to stagger the foam and still maintain the rigidity and strength to hold it in place. The biggest requirement for this type of DIY masking is the frame depth. This doesn’t use magnets or anything except the inside of the frame. Hope this helps, good luck.

Yes, Paul Hurt mentioned the DV in the chat too. This is potentially a great example what we can expect to see 20-30 years from now on anything shot in 1080 or 4K digitally. We don’t know what tech will come along and actual film has the best chance at being unconverted to any resolution.

@@BrightSideHT DV is a broad range of qualities, MiniDV is a specific format and is the worst of the tape based DV formats. Terrible compression algorithm, but at the time it was revolutionary because it made quality cameras available at incredible price points. It made independent filmmaking accessible to the masses. Vanilla Sky also has some footage shot in MiniDV. Lucas was shooting with a much higher quality DV format. Film is still limited to a theoretical 5.6K resolution when scanned, and my camera you saw last year at CEDIA shoots 6K RAW. Blackmagic just announced a camera that will shoot 17K RAW for $15,000. I think we’ll be okay for our lifetimes, even upconverting. AI can very effectively upconvert footage these days, and it can make a huge leap as long as you have some sort of self control when setting the de-noise sliders (unlike Cameron). And the AI tools are getting better every six months, far outpacing the display resolution increases. If they wanted to make 28 Days Later look better and release in 4K, they could do it.

Yes, anything that moves from one speaker to another is a pan. Side to side or front to back. Some of the best are back to front where you don’t see whatever is coming. One of the best usages of the pan is Nolan’s Tenet when the camera is between two trains going in the opposite direction. Each side of the room has sound panning in opposite directions.

I still have my 200+ laser discs too. 😊
